Goodell thinks playoffs will expand next season

I just feel bad for the players. Can you imagine the abuse their bodies take, not to mention the emotional abuse they are taking. They are slamming these kids with WAY too much work! I realize they live a dream life but if the NFL keeps this up, these kids are not going to live to see 50!

And we all know the NFL doesn't care about their future, they are looking for short term profits.

So how would the would the new format work? Only 1 team would get a 1st round bye? If they're going to do this crap the least they could do is award the team with the better record a home game.

Bad idea. Can't wait until a superstar player gets a season ending injury against a wildcard team that shouldn't even be in the playoffs. Rich people can be so dumb sometimes.

You know if a ton of people are already watching this game and dumping millions of dollars into it year after year, maybe it's fine just the way it is..just food for thought...

BTW, the Cowboys, in addition to having gone 8-8 in each of the last 3 years and missing the playoffs each year by losing their final game to an in-division rival, are also EXACTLY 136-136 in the regular season since 1997. Gee, I wonder why he wants mediocre playoff teams?

The NBA is exactly what I thought of when I read it.

I don't mind the NBA format because at least those playoffs are a series, and no one pretends every regular season game is of great importance.

NFL is a totally different animal with so few regular season games and single elimination playoffs.

if they schedule the games, people go, regardless if its thursday, monday, f**k it could even be on Wednesday and people would still go to an NFL game.

It wasn't too long ago when all home games were blacked out and there were no double headers on Sundays. How things have changed, if the ratings are there why not have games 7 days a week. The next big move by he NFL will be putting the Super Bowl on pay per view. The NFL doesn't believe in the rules of gravity, what goes up must come down.

This would be interesting if they reseeded the playoffs based on a team's overall record, but we all know that won't happen because division games = more $$$. So, basically what we'll have here is a throwaway playoff game, wasted on a team that shouldn't even be in there in the first place, and only serves to expose players to more injuries.

Granted, I absolutely loathe Roger Goodell but to be fair, he's just doing the bidding of the owners. The owners answer to money, meaning the only way to prevent this is to vote with your wallet. Don't go to the games, subscribe to their tv packages, or buy their merchandise. Then write a letter to your favorite teams owner explaining why, and advise them to vote against expanding the playoffs next year.

Being honest, I can't say I have a lot of faith that many fans will care that much.

Not a fan of this at all. However, I think this can offset how realignment created 4 division winners, which results in GB getting in at 8-7-1, the Giants at 9-7, etc.

Teams like Arizona missed the playoffs at 10-6, New England a few years ago at 11-5 IIRC. If I'm reading correctly, teams like them would get a playoff spot, and not Jerry's mediocre teams.

Quality over quantity is what the NFL should be striving for. I'd rather them take the top 6 teams from each conference to avoid teams from absolutely sh*tty divisions getting in the playoffs and even hosting a game.

yep. if they're gonna do this, reseed after the regular season based solely on team record. "division titles" are meaningless anyways (unless your team is seattle) nobody fricking remembers the NFC west winner from 2004...what i'm getting at is a 2nd place team who has 10+ wins and is in a stronger division shouldn't have to travel for a road game against a supposedly superior "division winner" from a weaker division who only gets to host the game by virtue of winning the divison even tho their record is 9-7 or worse....ovbiously the same tie-breakers would apply if there are multiple 12-4s, 11-5s, 10-6s etc.

I liked Goodell when he first started...I thought he would be an upgrade over Tag's...but dam this guy is out of control....the power has gotten to his head and so has his overvalued salary of 40 mil....this playoff thing is ridiculous and contradicts the notion how the NFL is so great because winning your division is so important and that makes every game count...The only thing he should consider changing about the playoffs is maybe give home field to the team with the better record and not award it to the division winner out right…but I don't think he will because it's not adding revenue…which is the common denominator in all his decision making…
