Soy-infused Northern California water…
Patrick Willis played with a broken hand iirc. Wrapped it up in a ball and was back out there. Is Ward gonna do that? lol

Is Ward going to be used as a slot corner?

Man, it sounds like Gipson will sit.

I hate messing with high end chemistry and production.

I honestly don't think the D will miss a beat. Ward is a pro and knows the scheme well. And it's nice to have Gipson on the bench. The secondary is deep.

I agree. Of the four starting DBs, Gipson is the weak link - that's a bad way to put it - he's the least strongest player. A healthy Ward is an improvement imo. Ward at slot CB can be an option if Lenior/Womack were not playing well, but Lenior is showing promise so he should be given a chance to make that his permanent role.
Maybe against good passing teams, the 49ers can use a Big Nickel grouping versus other team's base personnel. In a normal situation, I'd rather have a LB in there (not big nickel) to fortify the run defense when facing the opposing team's base personnel. Big nickel is when a team wants to sacrifice some run defense to improve passing defense.

I think it's a drop off in talent, chemistry and communication (esp. with Huf) from Gipson (right now). Not a big one. Ward's versatility would push him over the top here but that's not needed with Lenoir and Womack needing to continue to grow and develop from the slot. Wards never come close to ranking as a #3 S and with his long-standing hammy issues, I don't expect him to be any faster or more aggressive (lean towards conservative) than Gipson at 32. Ward is 31. He's just way more expensive.

But it probably won't matter much behind this front 7 either way. LOL

I can't say I've focused much on Gipson's play when reviewing the game so I don't know how he is graded so high on PFF. He's not forcing turnovers. I know he got the INT but that was Huf that made that play happen (tip drill). I suspect Gipson is benefitting a lot from the front 7 play as well as being on the field with Mooney, Huf, and Moseley.

He's done his job and done it well, but also agree with what you noted. . But this is more of a case of someone just not liking Ward.

I like Ward. He's just not a play maker. He's too conservative in this defense and I think it's just mentality over skill. Maybe now that he's seeing PD's and INT's with Gipson and Hufanga, maybe he let's loose some. But like I said, like the oversaturated market for DL, S is the same way so it didn't surprise me to see us play far better without Tartt and Ward, two solid players slightly overrated within our fan base and who contributed to historic low rates of TO's.

I like Ward, but let me lay out why I really don't like Ward

I like him...just think he's a bit overrated and we could do better. I said the same about Tartt. And you were the one who said, "...not even close" when I told you weeks ago Gipson was already playing just as well if not better. Oops. You did it again.

Enough when to the b******t.
I'm sure your are beyond fired up after today lol

I just call it like I see it. Sadly, he's out again and like Moseley too, now we're already down depth. Sucks.
It's the return of the club

This was my 1st thought. With all due respect… they are not built the same.
Any chance Ward plays with a cast and slides over to Mosleys spot? That way we keep Huf and Gibson as our safeties

I was thinking about this as well

Pat & Takeo were both playing with clubs?! I didn't remember that lol
Would a cast affect his tackling ability?
If Jimmie Ward was a SpongeBob character

Do we really need to remove Lenoir or Womack from SCB? Both have played well.
Jimmie Ward is having surgery. Kyle said he broke his hand on the opening kickoff but stayed in for 1 play afterwards.
If he plays with a club maybe now he can use that excuse for not ever getting ints unless its against the rams.
