KC: steal of the offseason?

Just wondering the general consensus on this. Alex Smith is having a career year numbers-wise - TD passes, passing yards, and yards per game - in 2013. KC is 11-3 and Alex's career win total and win % just keep climbing. And in that, I feel it begs the question: Did Alex warrant more than the 2013 2nd rnd pick and 2014 2nd/3rd rnd pick revisiting the subject now? Thoughts?

The Chiefs definitely got a great deal out of the trade because starting-caliber QB commands at least a 1st round pick, not a second round and a third round picks (original term). Even with two second round picks, going from 2-14 to 11+ wins in a single season is even better than expected (the consensus was Smith would add about 4 to 6 wins.)
The 49ers got a decent deal out of the trade. Would any team be willing to part higher than that? Nobody knows because some of the teams rumored to be interested did not participate in the bidding.

Got to remember that 2013 2nd round pick got traded down frm #34 to#40 got us tank N a 2014 3rd round pick... so basically we got 2 2nd round N a 3rd round pick plus almost 9million in free up cap space ....

May be the best deal in NFL history, no joke. Hopefully we take advantage of those picks

I think its a fair deal for both of us. We were able to hand the torch to Kap, who lead us to the superbowl last year and the playoffs this year. Alex is doing his thing in the AFC in the perfect system. One can only dream about a SB with 49ers/chiefs

And where are all the posters who were saying we would be lucky to get a 5th for him? You remember, the ones who exploded with abuse if anyone suggested we might get a 1st or 2nd for him?

KC got a great QB, we got a couple high picks. i think alex was the best offseason addition by anyone but Boldin has to be 2nd on that list. dude has been making a huge impact since game one and we got him for a late pick that wouldve had a hard time making the team anyway

I kinda was one of them, I actually was saying that, no way the 9ers could get a 2nd round pick for him....and I was right, the 9ers got TWO 2nd round picks for him!! Ha!!

This.
To get all that for a player that was probably gonna be released (nobody spends what was it 8 mill on a backup QB)
Great move

It's a win-win trade...Alex deserves to be a starter and his performance in KC has validated that. IF he had more reliable receivers (outside of the magnificent Charles), he'd have even better numbers. We haven't seen what Carradine can do yet, but I have no doubts he'll be a stud on our DL. Because Alex has led the Chiefs to a remarkable turn-around season, we'll get another 2nd rounder in the 2014 draft. I really don't see how both sides could've expected more.

Well, if you wanna know my opinion, I'm like, well, hell yeah the trade should've yielded more from a 49ers standpoint, especially since we have yet to really see a return on the transaction. But that's me being needy. And also, my knack for perceiving things in retrospect. Had anyone foreseen the effect Andy Reid and Alex would've had on the Chiefs turnaround, of course they would've demanded more, and rightly so. As it stands, the 49ers front office accepted the best deal on the table. Do I hold it against them? Yes, absolutely. In 2 years under the right regime, Alex killed the majority of his critics, won the hearts of doubters, AND after receiving tutelage in SF, he finds himself in a system that suits him even better. I feel the talent evaluators in SF should've been privy to the fact that Alex would be immensely beneficial to an Andy Reid screen-oriented offense, and in turn, pried a 1st round pick out of the deal. And again, that's me, and my perfect 20/20 hindsight vision. But still...damn...we've yet to see a return on the trade minus the cap space and moves made in lieu of.

Oh how I remember many people in the Zone were saying to just let Alex walk. What a blunder that would have been!
We did alright especially since nobody can predict the future.
Could we have done better - sure. Could we have done worse - Absolutely!
Having an extra 2nd round pick in a deep draft will be just fine.

It should also be noted that the 49ers got the first pick in the 2nd round (at least I think that is the case). So it was basically a 1st round pick anyway. KC still won on the deal, but realistically, the 49ers could not have gotten a better deal.

2nd pick (34th) in 2nd round, which we traded for the 40th pick (Tank Carradine) - who has yet to set foot on the football field and was placed on season-ending IR Tuesday - and a 2014 3rd rnd pick.
