If he got hurt this year "honoring" a contract, he would be SOL. These contracts are a joke anymore. Is his team playing it wrong because of the way the Niners have to do business? Yes they are, but the hyperbole of him somehow hating the team, etc etc, is just ridiculous.

Obviously, he doesn't have to honor it. It's his choice if he wants to sit and forego his salary if he thinks it's the best business move.

The 49ers have rewarded many players with contract extensions and raises when they were deserving. They can't do it for everyone. There is a salary cap in place. You have to match salary with the player's value, and most importantly, manage the cap intelligently. It's not nearly as simple as "I deserve a new contract, so give it me". Again, Boone has every right to say that, but that doesn't mean he's entitled to it. This is why we have Free Agency in place, to give players the opportunity to shop for the best deal when they are eligible.

People b***h about non-guaranteed deals, but if the players want fully-guaranteed deals like the NBA, they better be prepared to negotiate a new CBA, much lower salary cap, and the players as a whole get a much smaller piece of the pie. The injury risk in football is too great to be guaranteeing these deals. If you get hurt playing out your deal, I'm sorry, but tough s**t. It's a dangerous sport, they knew and accepted it when they signed up.

Agree with you though that people are hating on him too much. It's strictly business, not personal.

Players can purchase large insurance contracts for injury risk. Part of the game.

Looney looked really, really good. He may not have a job when and if he comes back.

At this point, he doesn't deserve a starting spot.
Losing game checks will really hurt. No forgiving fines if he misses regular season games.

At this point, you have to say that Looney is a better pulling guard. And having two good pulling guards is going to do wonders for the unpredictability of the running game. I think Alex Boone really did a face-plant here. He gave a young all-ACC fourth round pick with a prototype guard body and speed an opportunity and Looney has really taken advantage of it.

The hype of Boone being a traitor and the like is overstated but he is choosing to not honor his contract. Yes, the 49ers can cut him but that is part of what was or was not negotiated into the contract and within the parameters of player contracts as provided in the collectively bargained CBA between the NFL and the NFLPA. If the players wanted fully guaranteed contracts, they could have made that a key issue in the last labor negotiation. Granted, they would have had to give up something else to get it and its possible the NFL would have stood firm on keeping the system the way it is but, regardless, the NFLPA agreed to this contract structure. Boone also could have declined the longer deal, bet on himself and chose not to sign the extension. He would have made less, but if everything turned out the same, he also would not necessarily be in the position he is now. He also could have gotten hurt and had his career ended early without earning the additional money he has already received under the extension he signed a couple of years ago.

Boone is in breach of his contract. He is being fined per the CBA. Eventually, it will work itself out one way or another but this is the system the players agreed to.

The problem now is that Boone has pushed Baalke and Marathe into a game of chicken, where nobody wants to lose face and capitulate. In that scenario, Boone cannot win. Baalke would probably rather eat his own children than give an inch to a holdout guard coming off his first full year as a starter with two years remaining on his contract. Now that the holdout is real and we're little over a week from the start of the season, everyone is going to get entrenched until someone gets desperate.

If the Niners play well with Looney starting at guard, Boone is screwed. He'll have to come crawling back or make no salary this entire season, which would make his holdout all for naught. If the line plays poorly and Kaepernick gets sacked 6 times a game, then Boone will have the upperhand. But I still get the feeling that Baalke would eat his children before bending for Boone and his agent. One thing's for sure, none of this is for the good of the team.

I'm sure the FO wants him back but only on their terms (I agree), however, I agree, Looney looks like an adequate replacement.

Rather than eating the little Baalke's, I imagine that Trent will be looking for possible options coming down the waver wire.
