These contracts do not bind the 49ers to have him on the team. If he was bad they would cut him. Typically when a player outplays his contract, he gets a raise. The real story is not top 5 money in 2 years from now, because it is all about signing bonus. If he got hurt this year "honoring" a contract, he would be SOL. These contracts are a joke anymore. Is his team playing it wrong because of the way the Niners have to do business? Yes they are, but the hyperbole of him somehow hating the team, etc etc, is just ridiculous.
Obviously, he doesn't have to honor it. It's his choice if he wants to sit and forego his salary if he thinks it's the best business move.
The 49ers have rewarded many players with contract extensions and raises when they were deserving. They can't do it for everyone. There is a salary cap in place. You have to match salary with the player's value, and most importantly, manage the cap intelligently. It's not nearly as simple as "I deserve a new contract, so give it me". Again, Boone has every right to say that, but that doesn't mean he's entitled to it. This is why we have Free Agency in place, to give players the opportunity to shop for the best deal when they are eligible.
People b***h about non-guaranteed deals, but if the players want fully-guaranteed deals like the NBA, they better be prepared to negotiate a new CBA, much lower salary cap, and the players as a whole get a much smaller piece of the pie. The injury risk in football is too great to be guaranteeing these deals. If you get hurt playing out your deal, I'm sorry, but tough s**t. It's a dangerous sport, they knew and accepted it when they signed up.
Agree with you though that people are hating on him too much. It's strictly business, not personal.
Players can purchase large insurance contracts for injury risk. Part of the game.
