How on earth is there a hold up over money in Harbaugh's contract extension?
The GM can't just give a player or coach whatever they want. How many deals with high caliber coaches or players get done quickly? The coach/player wants to get paid as much as possible, and the team wants to pay as little as possible. It's not a new concept, and they'll eventually arrive at a middle ground or (unlikely) part ways. I think some of you are too afraid to lose a coach who has been great for the team, and forget that Baalke/Marathe have done an outstanding job creating very team friendly deals that have helped keep great talent. They know what they're doing.
I agree with what you're saying, but that isn't really relevant here.
If the 49ers give Colin Kaepernick too much money, it has an affect on the rest of the team. For example, giving Kaep $20M a year versus $15M a year is the difference between us being able to keep a player like Crabtree around. Everything must balance out in the end. There's a salary cap, and there are repercussions to overpaying.
However, we're talking about Harbaugh here. There is no cap. Coaches salaries to not count towards the salary cap. The 49ers have no shortage of income. They're not going to go bankrupt making Harbaugh one of the highest-paid coaches in the league. It's not going to prevent us from signing players to contract extensions. It will have literally no bearing on the team whatsoever. It would all boil down to the owners not wanting to pay up.
Now, someone else mentioned that the contract negotiations have maybe hit a snag over how much power Harbaugh will receive. If that's true, that sounds very plausible and understandable to me. But if the hangup is over money -- and the sticking point is, "well, you haven't won a Super Bowl yet" -- then that's absurd.
