Chiefs Matt Cassel injuryquarterback Matt Cassel practiced Wednesday for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy last week, but his status remains unclear for the team's game against St. Louis on Sunday.

"It will truly be a day-to-day thing,'' coach Todd Haley told reporters. ''We just have to see how he responds each day.''

Brodie Croyle started last Sunday's 31-0 loss at San Diego in place of the ailing Cassel. That defeat narrowed the Chiefs' lead in the AFC West to one game over the Chargers with three to play.

Cassel had his appendix removed last Wednesday -- a return in Sunday's Rams game would come exactly 10 days after the operation.

According to medical literature, a full recovery from such a procedure typically ranges from 10 to 28 days. A resumption of football activities this week by Cassel would barely fall within the earliest recommended return to normal activities from an appendectomy.

For his part, Cassel, who practiced on a limited basis, said he'll listen to his body in making a decision in consultation with the Chiefs' medical staff and Haley.

"If I can go out there and I can do everything I want to do without any discomfort, without any pain, then I'm going to go out and play,'' Cassel told the Kansas City Star.

I think the Chiefs can run all over regardless of the QB and their D will rebound against a less potent offense in STL

thats how i see it to stl are on bottom 12 in league in all categories i think thier defense can stop their offense and i think cheifs talented coaching staff will outsmart bradford and their young team

not to mention i think charles will run all over them

cassel was at practice yesterday....good sign!

He was limited in practice the last 2 days:

We're two practice days into St. Louis Rams week and Matt Cassel remains the only player on the Kansas City Chiefs injury report. Cassel was officially limited in practice today and Todd Haley said it's still a day-to-day thing and they're not sure of his status for Sunday.

What the Chiefs say this week doesn't really matter. It's all about who is getting the first team reps in practice (which we don't know for certain). Though no one will say how many reps each quarterback is taking, it appears Cassel is getting in his work. That would suggest that he's got a good shot at playing this weekend.

Whether Cassel is going to play or not, the Chiefs have no reason to update everyone his status. It's now a competitive advantage keeping his status hidden. The Chiefs can make the Rams prepare for two quarterbacks -- or at the very least keep Brodie Croyle in the back of their mind.

Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo said there's not a huge change in preparing for either quarterback because each would be playing within the Chiefs offensive system. The Chiefs said last week before Croyle's first start of the year that the system stays the same, though each quarterback may have some plays they like more than others.

We'll find out more details of Cassel's status tomorrow when the Chiefs declare his status for Sunday's game.

Why do people consistently root for this team to fail? If we happen to make the playoffs at 7-9 we deserve it, enough of all this negativity and b***hing from some of you members.

No team with a losing record deserves to make the playoffs.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel still not cleared to start yet. As one observer in Dome just texted, "Warmups weren't pretty."
