Claims can't be put in until the player has be put on waivers. And even if we did, I doubt we'd get him now that we won a game.
So you're saying it's Alex Smith's fault if we don't get Merriman?

Need a boost to our pass rush, makes sense
He hasn't done squat since getting busted for steroids and tearing up his knee, he isn't the same player.

He'd be an upgrade over every OLB we have on the roster lol I don't care if he had a few off years he HAS HAD GOOD YEARS...how many OLB's on this team have put together sack totals like Merriman. He's also only like 24? DO IT

San Francisco could be Merriman's next team

Shawne Merriman will be released by the Chargers once he's healthy enough to play again. And it appears he will definitely play again in 2010.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Merriman wants to play in Baltimore, Miami, or Dallas. But he's unlikely to get his choice because he has to clear waivers first.
Despite a contract that pays him $3.269 million, the 49ers sound likely to put a claim on Merriman. San Francisco will have a high waiver priority because of their record. The team even debated trading for Merriman before he was released.
Schefter says that Merriman could be healthy enough to play again in the next two weeks.

The bold make me sad.
I gotta wonder how he would feel playing here.

Merriman isn't going to help the pass rush. I'm not sure why anybody would want this guy, he hasn't done anything but get hurt since he got busted for roids.....
Of course, then again, what a great time to get back on the roids.....Follow me here...SD cuts him cause he sucks right? Well.....nobody is gonna sign him for the kind of money he wants because he isn't that good. Well, if the Niners pick him up for the remainder of the year he's gonna want to make a good impression. He'll be looking for that big new contract at the end of the year, so maybe he'll start juicing again! The Niners will pick him up and he'll play like a roided up beast for us. Once the season is over, he'll get busted for roids but he'll be someone else problem by then............
I'm all for it, lets get him

This is not to endorse picking up Merriman but just to state a FACT that the "he hasn’t done anything since being busted for roids" talk is simply NOT TRUE. He had a really good season the yr. after he got caught then had a MAJOR knee injury. This is the reason he has not done much for the past few seasons not because he was off the juice as some of you seem to think.

Also why is Merriman the only player who takes so much heat for PED's when multiple players have been caught yet we never mention them? There was a report once that said 52 Pro Bowl level players had been linked to PED's , I remember Peppers served a 4 gm. suspension yet only Merriman’s name is constantly brought up. At least be fair with your “morals” if you are disgusted by Merriman’s actions be just as disgusted with any other player caught with PED’s whether it be a kicker, punter, or even if a good player on Niners got busted. I won’t even go into the fact that you are either completely blind or idiotic if you don’t think a large percentage of the league is on some type of PED, some of which the league does not even yet test for.

Association between steroid use and injury in NFL players
Quote:
Players who took the drugs suffered more disc herniations and injuries to their knees, elbows, necks, spines, feet, toes and ankles than those who didn’t use 'roids. For example, 21 percent of those who used the drugs said they'd suffered herniated discs, compared to 10 percent of players who didn’t take them. Nearly 31 percent of users hurt their elbows, versus 17 percent of non-steroid users.
The concern with Merriman isn't his lack of strength or speed, but his ability to stay injury free (and bounce back when he is injured).

He's not an upgrade if he's always nursing injuries and missing games because of it.

I am not arguing the link between injuries & steroids, that is well documented. I am just sick of hearing "he has not done anything since being off the juice" which is not true. Like I said I am not endorsing picking up Merriman, but at least have valid reasons for not wanting him. If you are concerned that he can't stay healthy, or if he wants to play here, or is he more focused on Hollywood than football those are all very valid concerns.
