Head Coach options for the 49ers in 2011: Who do you like and why?

Agreed. I rather have Gruden, Harbaugh, or Holmgren. But I'd be curious as to if Cowher can have a team play well offensively or not. It seems like in Pittsburgh all his teams were ground and pound, but for most of his coaching career I was a younger fan so I'm not an expert(for example, I don't know much about his team that went to the superbowl vs the Cowboys).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Cowher favors the 3-4 and Marvin Lewis runs a 4-3.

I'd love Cowher if we could get like a Gary Kubiak as an OC/Assistant HC or something.

IMO, that would be awesome.

In my opinion Cowher is not a SF type coach. With the greatest of respect to a lot of coaches out there and their achievements the question WE as 49ers should always ask is "Would Bill have hired him?".

That's pretty much all I know about him, though. I know that people really want an experienced HC, and I do too, but Malzahn is actually the kind of guy I hope we interview, even if he doesn't get the job, to at least show that the organization is aware of innovative offensive minds and aware of how badly we need one.

According to the Washington Post, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has accepted Vanderbilt’s offer to be their next head coach.

It was reported last week that Vandy had a contract on the table for Malzahn that would pay the coordinator in the neighborhood of $3 million annually. There’s no word yet on whether those financial particulars are accurate, nor has there been any confirmation from Auburn on Malzahn heading to the Commodores.

Mornhinweg has emerged as a somewhat modern-day savant of the WCO, probably equal to what Holmgren was for us in the late 80's; building/expanding upon the philosophy into the next decade/era of football (with an aggressive approach).

If we're unable to land the big names (Gruden, Harbaugh or even Cowher), I think we should strongly consider Charlie Weis. Say what you want about his stint as the head coach of Notre Dame, Charlie was the top OC in the pro game from 2000-2004 (including 3 Super Bowl rings) and he could have had his pick of NFL head-coaching jobs if he stayed in the league. But he wanted to coach his alma mater.

The college game is all about recruiting...you can be the best Xs and Os guy around, but if you can't land enough high school talent, you will not win. Weis was unable to recruit enough talent on both sides of the ball to win consistently in South Bend.

The upside to Charlie is obviously his ability to install/run his version of the Erhardt-Perkins scheme, which spreads the field and uses the pass to set up the run. Sure, his current offense in KC is run-heavy, but only because the Chief's talent dictates it. Give him a gunslinger at QB and some weapons at WR/TE, and he's dangerous.

In terms of pure offensive genius, I'm not sure could do much better than Weis. Draft/sign a young stud at QB, keep Manusky around to run the defense and we could be on to something big.

Agreed. And add to the fact that the Patriots don't seem to skip a beat when they lose coordinators, this tells a lot.

I still have Jim Harbaugh as #1 on my list as a possible HC for next year.

I'm listing Marty Mornhinweg as #2. I think he'd do very well with who we have on the offensive side of the ball

Gruden as #3.

I don't have Holmgren on the list because I don't think he'll come back to coaching just yet.

Fisher would definitely be considered one of the top prizes if he was let go in Tenn; who wouldn't want him???

I can't say the same about Kubiak...what has he done? Besides, Kubiak recently received a 2 year extension, so it won't be easy for the owner to just fire him.
