Hey, I'm just thinking how we can solve this crappy pass rush that we'll have for what, 7+ years in a row. Heck, even Todd Kelly is better than the pass rushing OLBs we have now.
The last time we had a dominant outside pass rusher was when I used to watch Fred Dean and Charles Haley play. Doleman and Barker were good in the regular season but not so much in the playoffs. Andre Carter was good against average LTs but not the elite ones.
Well, I guess we'll just wait til next year to address this problem. 6-10, here we come.

I would definitely trade for Merriman, @ the right price of course. That's how bad our pass rush has been all these years. But we still haven't really seen the starting D run actual plays and scheme against teams, soo we'll see.....

I would give up that 2nd round pick in a heartbeat to get Merriman on this team.

Maybe the Patriots would give up Brady too since we need a QB pretty bad. Probablyt a 3rd and 4th next year should get it done

Which is why I responded by saying that type of lowballing is the reason we never acquire any major talent and the guys end up going elswhere while we continue looking for a solution to our problems. Merriman is a big-time contributor, it's highly unlikely the Chargers would trade him for a 3rd round pick. A 2nd rounder is obviously a better offer, but I doubt they'd take it after the raiders traded away a first rounder for a less-productive, older pass rusher. I think offering them a 2nd wouldn't be a bad idea, but when they turn it down, we need to up the ante.
Merriman is a proven commodity but he does have baggage and that's what is scaring me from giving him a 1st.
Admittedly, i'm conservative with draft picks. I strongly believe in building through the draft. We've only chosen one premiere pass rusher in any recent draft (Lawson) but i think that if we had targeted for OLBs, we'd be in a better position and wouldn't have to have this conversation right now.

Building through the draft is great, but lets face it, we probably won't get a pass rusher as good as Merriman in the draft. He's one of the best in the league.

Not if we had Merriman this year. It might be in the low-50s. We are a pass rush away from having a great defense. A great defense coupled with a great running game means playoffs for us.

We would be out of money at that point.
