To scouts and coaches. They absolutely care, you got all of them there with stop watches. Go listen to Kyle take about the short shuttle regarding lineman.
It's all part of the process and it works both ways. I think Golden's 4.28 40 time doesn't show up on film. He's fast, so why doesn't he play fast?
There's a massive difference between playing in college vs the NFL. The film and character matter most BUT athletic ability & how you stack up against the best in the league matter regarding to what they can be at the next level.
You think Stewart is gonna be a top 20 pick based off of his film?
Clearly, it's mattering less to scouts and coaches less and less every year.
I don't think Goldens 4.28 raised his stock in the eyes of anyone except the common fan. As you said, he doesn't play that fast, so how does it matter to his evaluation?
I'd agree there is some value to athletic testing in certain contexts....small school guy looks fast next to bums, but how fast is he really....athletic guy is raw at the game of football football, is the guy athletic enough to take the chance on developing him? But a small piece of the puzzle relegated to a small pool of players.
Yes, I think Stewart is a top 20 pick without the testing. We went into the process expecting him to be one of if not the freakiest athletes in the class. Combine counts it twice.
