- Drafting a complete TE is a must, no catch only TE's. Seems like that points towards any of the Big 10 TE's.
- Don't draft a RB. I find that amusing since the Niners almost always draft a RB.
- Don't draft a WR or PK earlier than day 3.
- Draft a safety with ball skills and tackling ability. Need more turnovers from our next FS.
- Draft big CB's.
- Don't draft a QB because the Niners don't need one. Every indication is the Niners will draft a 4th QB for the practice squad.
Did I miss anything?
It's harder to answer the absolutely do not draft question this year because our picks are so low. No matter what we take, there are going to be issues. Going back and looking at my traits, I am going to list players that work against what I think we should be going for.
I am going to say no to Jake Haener. I think some of the similarities with Brock Purdy will elevate his draft status higher than where he should be. He does not possess the physical skills of Brock (escapability) and in my opinion is destined to be an average backup. Given that we have three very good QBs on the roster, any QB drafted is destined for the practice squad, but the hype will have him going before the 6th or 7th round, so pass on Haener.
Zack Kuntz- looked super athletic at the combine and seems more of the big receiver type. I want a TE that can block and catch. Said TE doesn't have to be an elite pass catcher, but just be able to take advantage of being one-on-one or wide open, because they will be getting little attention from defenders.
Sam LaPorta- similar to Kuntz with the blocking. Add in when you consider how high both of these guys will be going in the draft. Pass.
Atonio Mafi- I think we met with him and although he is likely scratching the surface of his ability, I just don't see him fitting into what we like to go for in a guard historically or even recently (Aaron Banks bucks the trend a little bit). Just a massive human being, but he's no Trent Williams (who is), nor do I see him becoming a guy that can get to the second level, etc. Now if he's sitting there in the 7th round, I could change my position, but for now, I'll say no.
Roschon Johnson- we met with him, but what are we really adding here? We have Mason who is proven IMO and could handle a larger load if we didn't have Mitchell. We also have TDP, who the staff allegedly likes lol. The burned yet another 3rd on him, so they had to see
something. It's senses to burn another pick on a back that isn't a pass catcher.
