Justin Fields QB - Ohio State

Justin Fields QB - Ohio State

I have thought, from the beginning of the trade news breaking, that it meant we wanted one of Fields and Wilson and were happy with either, sod we pulled the trigger on a big trade to move to 3.

Somebody mentioned, and I don't remember where so I'm not quoting it directly, that it made sense considering the timeline. That we made the trade just after watching Wilson throw. That pro-day satisfied us that he was healthy and we could draft him with confidence. Otherwise we wouldn't have made the trade because if Wilson has medical questions then the Jets could have just drafted Fields and we'd be sitting at 3 with our dick in our hands. However, he satisfied our questions and we made the move because nobody can do anything to stop us from drafting one of Lawrence, Fields, or Wilson. That makes the most sense to me. At the same time, you don't go on about who you are going to draft because you don't know what's going to happen. Imagine the egg on your face if you move up in the draft and strut about how you are going to draft a guy and the week before the draft images of him in blackface show up on twitter....that's a bad look. Makes it look like you didn't do your homework and now you're drafting somebody you didn't want to after making a big trade to get up there.

It's Fields.

Good breakdown, if we traded to pick 4 or 5, then I would think it would have been more for Lance or Mac.

The trade was announced about 10 minutes before Wilson's pro day started, FWIW.

The pro day was scheduled 1 pm ET. Adam Shefter's tweet about the trade was 1:04 pm EST (10:04 PST). John Lynch was in attendance at the pro day. Unless Zach Wilson finished his pro day in one minute, and Lynch finalized the trade in another minute at the pro day, and Adam Shefter find out a minute later, then tweeted, the time line of pulling the trigger after watching Wilson throw doesn't add up.

The trade was finalized before Wilson threw.

SF had been trying to move up to 3 for weeks prior to the deal being finalized...the holdup was Miami finding a trade partner so they didn't have to go all the way to 12.

also SF only sniffed around at 4/5...the only deal they had made was to move to 3. This was all per Albert Breer.

The trade was in the works for weeks. The wait according to Breer was Miami not wanting to move all the way to 12, so they had to find a separate 3rd team...which was Philly.

100 percent obvious that Saleh tipped them off.

That's my understanding too. The difference between 3rd, 4th, and 5th means to me that they envision any of the top 5 QBs as upgrades and worthy of the trade up. What we don't know was if the 3rd pick was specifically strategic or if it was pragmatic. At this point it doesn't matter. I honestly believe that because of the COVID restrictions, they didn't know exactly which QB they'd choose / prefer, but the initial scouting placed all 5 guys as worthy of the pick and worthy of at least next year's first round pick too. Also, part of the calculus was that next years QBs were not valued as high, so it was time to strike. And by moving up, it gave them adequate time to examine their options out in the open as opposed to in the shadows at #12.
The fact that there's enough film on Fields (which kyle said in his presser) and that he has had eyes on him dating back to 2017 all the way through the draft process...makes the fields fo SF idea hold water. The kid has been looked at as a top 2 pick since 2019. Moving up for a talent like him makes much more sense imo.

Fields in Shanny's system would be devastating for the rest of the league. Devastating.

Breer said they never offered anything for 4-5 and more or less was asking if they were willing to move down....my takeaway from that is they were seeing who wanted a QB in the top 5 and who was willing to move down for someone that may wanted a QB.

They along with Miami didn't shop their pick with any other teams...it was just a matter of Miami finding a 3rd team.

I can't wait for the draft to be done at this point lol

Right it's weird how anyone would think different

I bet if you asked any other GM which QB they hope kyle takes, all of them would say Jones lol. Danny Kelly of the ringer (Seattle fan) said the one thing the league can't let happen....let shanny get an elite level QB with high end traits lol.
