MADDOG Big Board?

Something for people who follow the draft to chew on: The greatest barometer of success for OL in the NFL is the short shuttle at the Combine. Ezra Cleveland aced it this year.

Hey, guys. Just a funky year that I am taking off. Not a permanent thing. My older son is a top tier hockey player in Ohio and I have been really working hard to prep him for his tryout on one of the two elite teams in Ohio for next year. My younger son is also a really good player and I am prepping him up as well. Teaching responsibilities have also increased dramatically, even with being out of school. Just a lot of factors.

At the same time, I am watching a little bit (not the normal 4-5 hours a day in a typical year). So, I do have some thoughts. Just haven't been on the board more than a handful of times in the year.

I will be on the live draft thread on Thursday, and spotty on Friday and Saturday.

My thoughts are the Niners need WR help. As most of you remember, I predicted Pettis would be a 4th or 5th WR on this roster, standing around on the sidelines. I didn't like the Samuel pick as much as AJ Brown, who I collected in last year's draft in the second round. But, Samuel was better than I thought. They simply need more help.

My WR board is:
1. Lamb
2. Mims
3. Pittman
4. Jeudy
5. Jefferson

The only WR I would select at 13 is Lamb. But, I would also need to see who else is on the board at that pick.

The Niners have to strongly consider a number of players at 13 and 31: They have to address LT at some point. Guys like J. Jones, A. Jackson, E. Cleveland have to be strongly considered.

I still feel the team lacks a safety for the future. At 31, they have to take a LONG look at Antoine Winfield. He reminds me a ton of Earl Thomas.

CBs are so unpredictable in the first round. Buyer beware!!! It is better to blow money in free agency at the position.

I will drop in from time to time the next couple days. Should be an interesting ride, as always.

That's really cool to hear. I was in the same boat 20 years ago. Living in the south (VA) was really hard to stay in competitive hockey. I had to do a lot of traveling (which I know was stringent on my parents) and work extra hard to get noticed, so I understand the commitment. In the end I decided to stay local and go to college nearby, rather than pursue a path in hockey. Had a couple offers and I thought long and hard about it. I don't regret my decision. It has led to a nice life for myself and family. Of course you wonder where the other route would have led to as well from time to time. Either way the route I choose was rewarding for me. Steady job, nice house and neighborhood. Great family. I hope the same for your son's in whatever they choose to do.

Best of luck to you and your boys.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Hockey in the south is crazy. Have to travel LONG distances to get to a rink for many, Just not that competitive. Hockey really growing in Columbus, and it is a nasty dogfight for limited elite slots. Trying to be top 6 defenseman in the state is a challenge, but he's got a great shot. Just takes a lot of work.

No kidding. It has gotten a little better since I played. I was constantly traveling as a teen. I think the USPHL has been a great league for the teens and young adults. It has given the youth a much bigger platform to showcase on then was available in my time. Is that the league your referring to by chance? You said elite and it made me think of that league because I follow the Richmond Generals (both elite and premier) whom compete in the southeast division of the league.

I was gonna ask what position he played but you covered it. Being a former goalie for 10 years, there's no better friend to have on the ice than a great defenseman.

I think he goes higher than predicted right now. Cleveland in a trade back is kind of where I see him going.

Ezra caught my eye with some mock draft simulators a few months ago but doesnt he have some medical concerns especially with one of his feet?

then again if he aced the short shuttle...

Yup, late teens to mid 20's. Would love to see Niners trade down from #13 for him.

Sidebar: What levels are they? I've got a bantam A (goalie) and a squirt BB (forward).

Trying out for Ohio AAA Blue Jackets. There are two AAA in Ohio, one in Columbus (where I live) and one in Cleveland. Will be a second year Squirt. Goalies are huge for a team. Great goalies are gold. My son is a righthanded defensemen Good luck to your boys this year.

I have a very informal list right now. I can tell you that at 13, my pick will be Lamb or J. Jones, unless somebody shockingly falls.

At 31, it will be between a WR, OT, or Antoine Winfield, based on my projections.

Nice! I've got family in the Columbus area (Granville) who are big hockey fans and bigger Jacket fans. The sport has exploded in that area so I'm not surprised that the competition is intense.

I know first-hand what a huge commitment club and travel hockey is for a family, but it is worth all the sacrifice. Good luck to you and your son!

I like Jefferson more than Ruggs as well

That's cool you have family locally.

Travel hockey is crazy. The boys have chewed up the Midwest this year. If you are a top level player, you are all over the place. My 9 and 8 year old have played in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo, Grand Rapids, Toledo, South Bend, Fort Wayne, and will be in Chicago and more this summer....maybe. We are gone a LOT during the season. Different from my days growing up where a two hour drive for an All-Star tourney was rare.

Ruggs production just scares me. I get that he is fast, but you are banking a lot on the idea that he will emerge as a top guy, who was a third or fourth option for his former team. Too rich for me in the first round.

Let's see the list! I'd take a quick top 20-30 player "informal" list from the GOAT MD any day!
