And we lost the SB even with a dominating dline because in today's nfl the f**k ass refs wanna swallow the whistle and not call 1 damn holding call on the offense. Having at least 1 game breaker like a Jeudy or Ruggs at wr so defenses aren't forced to double kittle every damn time and scoring more points instead of depending on a mediocre horizontal passing game isn't going to cut in today's nfl. You have to at least scare teams with guys that can consistently beat you deep. This team needs to get better adding faster weapons and upgrading the interior line, I love deebo but I don't trust him yet to constantly beat the opposing teams top cb if we go in as him being #1Originally posted by 9ers4u:Originally posted by thl408:The offense would be more than fine with a protected Jimmy, Kittle, a bunch of "#2" WRs, and Kyle calling plays. imo.
100% this!
Isn't this how we got to the SB last year? And no, Sanders isn't a #1 anymore. To be a #1 you need to be a go to guy. In Shanny's offense anyone can be the go to guy.

If you're basing this off of the SB loss then you shlould be wanting a CB no? We got beat because one of our starters (Moseley) made the wrong read and didn't cover his deep responsibility on the Hill catch. The other CB got burnt like toast on the following possession and aint getting any younger. The IOL is spot on though.

You're right. Losing in the freaking SUPERBOWL is all the evidence we need to know that our mediocre horizontal offense just simply can't cut it in today's NFL! The only possible solution is a top 15 pick at WR.

This is a snapshot in time - a bunch of WRs just got new deals and reset the market. Some of the top OL in the league are either older (Whitworth is 38) or midway through a long-term deal.
Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Michael Thomas, Tyreek Hill, and OBJ all signed deals this year or last year for $18M+ per year.
Elite left tackles haven't signed new deals recently with the possible exception of Taylor Lewan who signed one two years ago. The top two APY contracts are for RTs currently (Lane Johnson at $18M/year and Trenton Brown at $16.5M/year).
5 of the top 6-7 tackles are either on rookie deals or long-term contracts they signed when the salary cap was much lower.
Ronnie Stanley, Ryan Ramczyk, and Laremy Tunsil are still locked up on rookie deals (Stanley and Tunsil are going to get paid next year). Tyron Smith cost himself tens of millions by signing an 8 year deal when he could be earning >$20M/year right now. Terron Armstead has 2 years left on a 5 year deal. Those guys will reset the OT market.
A year ago, the WR average was closer to $16M and even then, they had signed deals more recently than the top OTs.
The top WRs signed deals recently which is why the APY is so high. Fast forward 2-3 years when those WRs are still on their new contracts and the OTs sign new ones and the picture will look different.

Great post. It would be an interesting case study on how many higher paid WR's and OL change teams too. What's the smartest investment?

The 13th or the 31st?
I wouldn't be shocked or surprised if they pulled it at 13 but 31 seems more reasonable but this is the NFL and anything can happen. We do not have a replacement for Joe... so we shall see

Did Donte Whitner just say that we don't need a WR in the draft?
"I played with Travis Benjamin in Cleveland while Kyle Shanahan was our offensive coordinator. And let me tell you, he loved Travis Benjamin," Whitner said on 49ers Central.
Whitner played safety for 11 NFL seasons, including two years with the Cleveland Browns. He and Benjamin were teammates. Shanahan spent the 2014 season in Cleveland as the offensive coordinator.
"Travis Benjamin fits this offense perfectly," Whitner said. "With those guys crossing the middle and being able to break back and have down-the-football-field speed, he fits in automatically with his offense.
"If you can get Marquise Goodwin to wake up on the outside, you'll have two of the fastest wide receivers in the National Football League."

If people don't like a WR at #13, then get one of the DTs or one of the OLs.

I would love to see the 49ers trade down at both spots. Draft multiple receivers in the 2nd round, pick up a CB and OL. Dream scenario for me.

I saw a quote from Gil Brandt yesterday who said there are about 16 elite players in this draft and 17-60 something you'll be getting a good player.
With that said wouldnt you want to get that 1 elite player vs 3 good players?

I see his point. I rewatched the season and Goodwin was huge for Garoppolo when healthy at the X with Deebo at Z. Throw in Benjamin, Hurd and Taylor at the slot, he's got a solid point.
But we can STILL draft another X in this very deep draft to learn behind Goodwin. That's what Pettis did and then was featured after the bye-week in 2018. Deebo took off the second half of last year.
Kyle is still trying to get a 2nd TE too which also reduces the snap count needed from the X.

Obviously Gil Brandt and I have extremely different views on what makes an elite prospect. I would rather have 3 good prospects than 1 very good prospect, especially when it comes to these WRs. It's not like we're passing up Chase Young

Doesnt mean the first 16 picks are going to be the elite players. Especially if 4 QBs go, they wont all be elite. can easily trade back to 18, 21, 22, possibly 25 and still target one of the top 16 players on our board.

Agreed on this one. Unless something insane like a Chase Young or Okudah falls to 13. In which case, not trade and take one of them. The 31st is a trade down pick as far as I can see.
