Watt.

Great synopsis. Lol
Kinda a vague question because each player makes a different impact and it depends on the team, needs, schedule, etc.

With the examples you gave? Obviously JJ Watt was more impactful even if he gave you multiple seasons ending on IR.

Watt for intangibles on and off the field hands down. Team sport

Watt was not only the more impactful player, but outstanding in the community. Easy choice.

Yes. And a leader in the locker room. Aldon, aside from the first couple of seasons, was a self destructive force. No comparison.
You have to take the possible HoFer and live with the injuries. When Watt is healthy it's 20 sacks. The only thing Aldon gives you is the chance to draft someone else.

Knock on wood here because hopefully this doesn't happen but if Bosa has some injuries I'm still taking him over someone like Foster. Any day of the week.

Character always wins, even when injured, the impact on teammates is tangible.
Watt. Injuries are largely unpredictable and JJ hands down is the better player on the field and the better guy in the lockerroom and in the community.
I mean Watt pretty easy. I think I was all about Robert Quinn that yr after both WRs and Peterson were off the board.

All of this. And people tend to forget, besides AS's rookie year Watt had more sacks and tackles per year in his 5 years of playing. Even when AS had 19.5 sacks in year two, Watt had 20.5 with a lot more tackles.
Watt bc he's played more at a higher level.

Although I will say Aldon Smith was a great fit at the time. We needed an 3-4 Edge rusher.

Yes. And to further add...Aldon Smith's production was heavily driven by Justin Smith's dominance that required double teams. Aldon's production post Justin's retirement was modest for the 49ers and his brief stint with the Raiders. Very good player, but heavily aided by the talent around him.

Watt has been dominant in different schemes and personnel. Just imagine a Justin Smith-JJ Watt defensive line....wowzers.
It's always better to take 'Watt was' over 'what should of been'.
