I love Smith. The Tigers did kick him out from time to time on certain sets. He did just fine. Really solid knee bend, and excellent use of his hands. Fun guy to watch. However, kicking him out would be temporary. With 32" arms, it isn't something ideal.

What additional picks would get from moving 9 to 12 or 15?

Teams use the Draft Trade Chart as a guideline for the numeric value of each pick and selection, although they are not bound to follow it. If you stick with the chart, trading down from 9 to 12 would net you that team's 4th rounder. It is not much compensation. Moving from 9 to 15 will get you their third rounder, but you'd have to throw in a 5th rounder in addition to the number 9 overall.

I do think the Niners could be a potential trade partner for a team desperate to move up and snag a QB in the top 10 picks. I just think all four of the top guys will be gone before the 9th overall. I see them picked at 1,4,5,and 6.

MadDog, do you think Isaiah Wynn is a good fit for Shanny's system? Could you envision the 49ers drafting him if Lynch trades Back a few spots?

Also, Hoovtrain asked about Braden Smith, I'd like to ask a similar question about Quenton Nelso. Do you think that Nelson can play right tackle in the NFL? Perhaps fill in at that position temporarily for a year or so or maybe in an emergency? I think Larry Allen played tackle for a time with the Cowgirls and if Nelson fell to nine his ability to swing outside would make him that much more valuable to the 49ers.

Any time you neuter the Alabama DL, you have my attention. I think Wynn can play anywhere along the OL, he is that good. But, LT is not going to happen. He is a very good athlete and would fit really well in Shanahan's system.

I am not as high on Nelson as many others because I see some issues with his pass protection at times. Very much nit-picking, but some are grading him as a top 3 best player (I have him as 12th best), so I will nit-pick. I don't see that level of domination. He has the length to play RT, and maybe even LT. Just a risky move for a team that sees a pretty good player in his current position.

I'd feel great if he was on the board in the early 3rd round. But, that is not going to happen. I don't think he'll be around for our late 2nd, so he is really not on my 49ers radar right now, unless a trade was made.

When I watch him, I see a guy who really performed well last year. He rolled out a couple clunker games, but the rest was solid. In a down LT draft, he might be the best guy on the board at LT, which is crazy to say.
Hey MD, can you talk about Minkah and Derwin. Just want your thoughts on what they do good and the fit in our scheme. Both seem pretty versatile.

Also can you talk about any other edge rushers that i can watch video on. Davenport and Landry are the guys that people consider but I don't see it. Solid guys but between FRee and the draft, there doesn't seem to be great options for an edge rusher. Ive tried looking some but haven't found "the guy" yet.

Lastly, this is kind of off subject but do you have any idea what happened to Cameron Erving, the center that went to the Browns? I thought I remember you were high on him and i was as well. Did the Browns just goof that up and ruin him?

Let's start with Erving. Been a total disaster...curse of the Browns. They drafted him to be the center of the future, with Alex Mack headed to free agency the next year. So, they had Erving play RG, RT and LG his first year. All of them were simply not a fit for him. He was always better at center. He then got injured, lost his confidence, and never recovered. Traded to KC last year. Truly a shame because he was so good at center for FSU. Complete miss by me.

I see Derwin as a SS in the NFL. He is better at the line of scrimmage. Physical guy, good athletic build, probably would slide into a linebacker role in passing downs. I think he has many great physical tools. Mental mistakes can bite him.

Fitzpatrick is the perfect centerfielder. Let him roam and make play, run from sideline to sideline, and let me orchestrate the secondary. I'd love to see him on our team, and I think he will be the pick at 9.

As for edge guys, sign me up for a Day 2 prospect like Uchenna Nwosu of USC. I think he ends up a late second, early third draftee. Can rush off the edge, play OLB on base downs, make plays. I like him a lot. High football intelligence. I also like the speed of Oklahoma's Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Super productive, and fast around the end. Rutgers' Kemoko Turay is a boom or bust prospect in the 4th/5th round. He is a guy who can bring the heat around the edge.

To be honest, it really isn't a very good pass rush class. I like the guys inside more.

I am not high on Arden Key at all.

do you think teams sometimes get too hang up on measurables...i mean russell wilson is below the 6-3 + standard for qbs..derrick deese played left tackle very well at 6-3

So we just send Colbert to the bench? Jimmie also was retained.

Just your standard, superb, every day best board by the master...thanks, MD. As for kolton, i think you have him right where he should be. Some have him going a lot earlier, ( I guess because he is a LT and there arent' really any others), but rank wise i think he is perfect. Well done, again, MD. Just so much work, great work ....always impresses the heck out of me.

MD.....I hadn't really thought of this before you brought this up, but if the Niners drafted Fitzpatrick and gave him the Earl Thomas free safety gig in Saleh's defense, that would push one of the team's young safeties (Colbert presumably) out of the starting lineup but give them great depth.

The question is...would it also push Jimmy Ward back to the CB position, (which, given his size, might be a better position for him anyway) and provide depth behind R Sherman. That way, the entire secondary has far more depth. Your thoughts?

Cheers!

Fitzpatrick if the 49ers take him then they will try him a corner first since we have 3 safeties. They played Solomon Thomas out of position so I think this will be their mind set and protection if Sherman is not 100 percent.

But why not draft Wynn or Williams for the OL and become the number 1 scoring offense this year. Surely Kyle has to get selfish after drafting 2 defensive players in the first round last year.

But they will try to trade down first and target Landry or Davenport is the most likely scenario.

Wynn and Williams are not even close to BPA at 9 and that is why we will not draft them unless they are available in the late 1st amd we trade up from 59 or do a huge trade back from 9 into the 20s.

TraDE down is certainly possible as well, and staying at 9 is equally likely. I wonder what Tampa's demands would be to trade back from 7 to 9........so curious
This list is so legit/realistic given how s**tty the market is rgt now. I would've put Denzel Ward at 20-22, but it's indeed very realistic he goes top 15 as the pundits project (combine heroes). This is a really terrible draft unless you're 1-6, as most of the top 10-20 would've been second round reaches in any other market year. Another reason Lynch is a genius, and knew not to overpay the top free agents, since cheap draft money could be spent on 5-8 guys via this draft + undrafted.

Awesome job MadDog, thanks for continuing these tenuous efforts!
