How is a top level route runner a project?

I am usually skeptical of a WR who is drafted and expected to contribute right away. IMO, WR's should be athletic, raw, and a 2 year project. This guy is perfect because he can contribute right away with punt returns and will eventually be a swiss army knife for us once Garcon is most likely done after this season.

Lol I keep seeing people blast him. If he was able to run at the combine, he would've dusted the 40, and all these armchair GMs would be drooling at his sub 4.5 numbers. People are fickle.

I don't think he's a starter right away, but he's definitely going to be used on offense.

He's a filthy route runner with good hands, will have Kyle Shanahan calling plays, and Jimmy throwing to him. I'm not too worried about them trading up to get him.

Agreed. Was always impressed when I watched him at WAS. And regarding the trade up, I'll just put my faith in that these guys get paid to know whether or not these guys may get picked earlier than expected .
Hats off once again, Hero...you called it. As for being heir apparent to Garcon....i bet he gives Pierre a run for his money. Looks like it will be tough to keep him off the field. Also looks like he can play any WR position.

Wow, jimmyG is going to like this dude. Love at first route. As for routes, somebody said he isn't a great route runner? Really? His double move reminds me a lot of a guy who wasn't bad at it #80 GOAT. Also love the way he watches the ball into his hands. And leaping ability? Awesome.

Watching all i could find, his routes are crisp and with a double move, he loses a lot of college DBs. As for his PR, 8 TDS in 50 or 60 attempts? That's unreal. He seems to run the returns with his head on a swivel...not an easy thing to do. As for speed, he doesn't look that fast until he puts it in overdrive and leaves defenders behind. Didn't see draft that much yesterday but read about move up. Unhhh....just reviewing the tape here, i can see why. I got no problem with moving up a bit to get him. I don't think of any of the top 3 WRs...that any are better than Pettis. And that i like.. Oh, he does have that OBJ long arm reach one handed trick also. Odd but on a couple of those for TDs, it still looked like he watched the ball all the way into his hand on the way to the turf. Hero, thanks for the education. And screw the complaints about moving up . Sure looks like it was worth it. Just goes to show that even tho he got left out of top billing for WRs, he should have been there. REally, anybody you honestly like better? And ...he didn't have JG throwing to him. Boy he ought to excited once he sees Jimmy at work. This is our 2018 stud WR. Gonna make some teams wonder who the heck this is. Was Luke warm on him until the film. Wow!

He does look a little bit like Jerry Rice, and his punt return abilities look a lot like John Taylor. I'm with you - he's a good player and a good pick and I'm fine with them trading up to get him. Your point about Jimmy liking him and throwing to him is spot on. This guy, with Jimmy throwing to him, is going to burn a lot of defenses in the future.

WR1- Pierre Garcon
WR2- Marquise Goodwin
WR3- Dante Pettis
Slot- Trent Taylor
TE- George Kittle
RB- Jerick McKinnon
FB- Kyle Juszczyk

Wow. Jimmy Franchise has some weapons to throw to.

We need another TE....hopefully somebody big

Agree. My thoughts exactly. I don't see them taking an edge rusher in this draft anymore. If they thought they needed an edge rusher - there were a ton at pick #9 and their second round pick, but they chose offense. I'm betting they stay on offense on the third day. Then again, I was wrong two days in a row, why not make it three!

This kid is legit as hell. Insanely great route runner, great hands, and is quick as hell. Jukes the s**t out of guys... just hope he doesn't get hurt a lot because he seems to be a little too skinny. Happy with this pick

I keep seeing people post that......

The youtube video i saw, did not show that...it showed a guy with tons of extra upper body motion that was off balance regularly when he was coming back to the ball.

I never watch Pettis play... I am wondering if I saw the wrong video....

Nope, that's him. With all the solid WRs gone in the WZ member mock draft I was considering this guy at pick 87 until I learned he hadn't run a 40 this offseason due to an ankle injury.

Where did i blast him? I clarified immediately after, probably same page, that i feel his routes could be crisper, and just needs a little work on the rough edges, i see some wasted movement at times... In this post i even say i like him a lot lol.

Im definitely not down on Pettis.

He is a solid route runner. He is not perfect however as some are making him out to be. I watched him play a lot personally. Even saw him live once.

He does have some rough edges on his routes that need refining, but he is at a great place to improve there.

The reason he sometimes looks a bit awkward coming back for balls, is because his QB was horrible and always off target, and Pettis often had to work aggressively and awkwardly to get to the football for a catch. That is a + to his game, not a -. He is actually very remarkable at attacking the football, and honestly, its the trait i like most about him.

But yes, i do feel he needs to work to refine his routes a bit more then most seem to believe here.

IMO he is Heir apparent to Garcon. I dont see him in the slot long term. Although i do think thats his best shot to see significant playing time at WR year one. I dont think he is ready to challenge Garcon for playing time yet.

I LOVE his fire foot technique. He smokes dudes with it, especially when he uses it on double moves.

Another nasty double move.

His great releases+long arms+good vertical+high point ability make him a great weapon in the red zone. Plays bigger than 6'1".

Fire foot+power skip to cross over the DB.
