Funny how they weren't saying good things about him before the draft.

99% of NFL fans say good things about the guy their teams drafted AFTER they're drafted. Optimism springs eternal.

In my expeeince not niner fans lol. I hadn't heard a complaint about Thomas before the draft but some people weren't happy with pick. Some even complained about foster at 31

Yeah, seriously. I was just thinking about this. Everybody is excited and expects the 90th percentile outcome for a player they draft.

Stop me if you've heard this one before: "well, if it wasn't for [injury / motivation issues / a down year in 2016], [player we drafted in round 2-5] would've been a top 20 pick!" Funny, it's almost like 120 prospects in the draft were "top 20 talents" if it weren't for some concerns! It's almost like they... dropped to round 2-5 for a reason.

A lot of people were b***hing about Thomas before the draft especially with the complaining from those in the media like Biderman.

If this dude is not starting quality, then this pick is an error.

He is not a starter. Therefore, this is an error.

Are you talking starting quality right away or ever? Just curious. My guess though is that Shanahan has studied CJ a hell of a lot more than you or anyone in the WZ (or Mel Kiper or any of those guys) so I am will have to trust his judgement on this one. It is only an error if he doesnt prove to be a good player in this league and that wont be known for quite some time.

The funny thing is... if Peterman had been the pick most would have loved it. You know... the guy who still hasnt been picked yet by any team and who our QB guru clearly didnt like as much as Beathard.

Oh this run is going to be good.

Really good.

Again, love the focus on positions of need. No more dumpster diving for value.

Is this the first draft since 2012 where we havent picked a guy with ligament injury in the first four rounds? How hard was that?

There's still time. Jake Butt is still available!
Some of you guys are thinking too hard. Beathard may or may not be the QB of the Future, but Shanahan likes him and, where he was sitting in the draft, thought to go and get him.

With 2, 3, 4 years of quietly learning the position, he could maybe be a starter... or he could be a valuable backup and presence in the QB room. Both scenarios are good because we currently only have stopgaps on the roster.

He's a mid rounder with potential and it's not like the other QBs in this class are world-beaters either. Lower your expectations. If we traded the farm next year for one of the highly touted QBs in next year's class, scrutinizing it might make more sense.

I tell you what!! I didn't know jack sh!t about this guy until we picked him up. But, after watching some films on him just now, I came away very impressed with this kid. He could be the sleeper for this draft overall. He's not the high profile prospect that everyone was looking for but he has some very impressive tools that fits Shanahan's system perfectly. A natural thrower with great zip on his balls, goes through his progressions, deep ball accuracy, great swing balls to RBs and WRs screens, got a good feel for the pocket, quick release are only some of the things I was able to picked up from this kid. He could be something and I will trust Shanahan's evaluation on this kid. I know some will say that we could've had him on the 4th or 5th but you never know what's going on in those draft rooms, so why take the risk of losing your guy, if he's your guy go get him. Some other team might have picked him up before you get to pick. Only time will tell though but I'll trust Shanahan and Lynch on this one guys.

This!

Agree

AND - I feel Cousins will be a Niner next season

You absolutely NAILED it!!!!!!!

Here's an article from the news feed that makes a similar point and offers up some thoughts as to why Shanahan pulled the trigger on a guy that some saw as later round prospect. http://www.knbr.com/2017/04/29/how-scars-from-the-rgiii-situation-led-shanahan-to-draft-c-j-beathard/

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that while Shanahan drafted Kirk Cousins, it was a different Shanahan.
