I completely agree with MD on Foster being outside of top 32, and was of that opinion before his Combine incident.

On Fournette, I disagree with MD, but I think I understand his reasoning. Fournette had ankle issues which is worrisome for a big RB. Fournette already has limited agility and is not elusive, he is a power back with top end speed. He isn't a great receiver, is slow to accelerate, and too often runs stiff and upright. At the college level, its true he can easily run through and over defenders but at the NFL it won't be as easy.

If healthy, I think Fournette will have a good and possibly great NFL career. But he certainly carries with him some bust potential.

how does mahomes compare to matthew stafford?

he reminds me of stafford a lot

Both have huge arms, can make every throw. Stafford more prepared to play earlier than Mahomes. Mahomes better mobility and improves really well. I see more Big Ben than Stafford

SOOOOOOOOOOOO inconsistent. I can't imagine him being high on the 49ers board. Lynch wants guys who LOVE the game, and nothing about McDowell's play suggests that to me.

He was basically the lone talent on that defense. Hard to give it your 'all the time' effort when you are the only one making plays. Dude played a very credible nose tackle at 280. He seems like a player that could be MUCH better in the pros if he lands in the right place.
Does anyone know how Buckner would grade out vs the DLmen in this years draft? Would he be the #1 rated player?

He would still be a top 10 pick and one of the top DL, depending on team's scheme and vision on how to use him.

Hey MadDog - Great analysis as always. Look forward to your big board every year around this time.

Question for you on the quarterbacks. I haven't watched as much film as you on any of these guys...mostly just the highlight reels which are no good for actual scouting work. However, being a Kizer fan coming into the draft process, I did watch re-watch a few of his games from beginning to end (Texas, Mich St, Stanford).

I read your analysis on Kizer in a different thread and your biggest knock on him was bad footwork and the fact that he doesn't go through his progressions very well after the primary option. I mostly agree with you based on the film I've watched. When throwing to the primary receiver, some of the throws he makes are out of this world and I doubt there are a handful of other guys in the league that can make those same throws...the kid has a rocket arm. But rarely saw him make a solid throw to a secondary option after resetting in the pocket. However, I attribute some of that to a terrible O-line where he rarely had a clean pocket...Granted, there were times he actually stepped into the rush and felt pressure that wan't actually there causing the pocket to collapse on himself.

My question for you is...Why are you so high on Mahomes when he also has horrible footwork and he rarely sticks around in the pocket? I love his arm and athletic ability and I agree with you in that he has the most upside of the QBs. But he also seems like the riskiest, mainly because of the same knocks you have on Kizer...Why, then, do you think Mahomes is repairable and has the potential to be great but you are so low on Kizer? I think I even read you say that you'd be disappointed if the Niners took Kizer at any point in the draft.

I like both Kizer and Mahomes because of their big arms combined with athletic ability. Sounds a lot like Kaep, I know, but both of these guys have way more fluid throwing motions and I don't see them being as jumpy in the pocket as Kaep. I think Trubs will be the most solid on day 1 because of his accuracy but I don't see the upside that I do with Kizer and Mahomes. Not a huge fan of Watson because of his lack of arm strength combined with a gimmicky offense but the kid has heart and a solid work ethic so maybe he could develop into a starter, but I don't see superstar level arm talent.

So to wrap up my question for you, what do you see as the biggest differences between Mahomes and Kizer and why do you love one and hate the other when they seem to have similar skill sets and similar drawbacks?

Thanks for the kind thoughts. You mentioned a number of things that stand out to me about both QBs. It is difficult to project these guys because all of them have a LONG ways to go before they are effective NFL QBs. The upside to Mahomes stands out to me. Best arm in the draft, elusive, and productive when having to shift off a primary receiver. Buys a lot of time to make throws, but consistently is looking downfield to make plays, not just tuck and run like many do.

To me, he has a bit of a flair to his game, and I think he becomes a really solid leader that guys buy into. To me, he is a smaller version of Big Ben, but with even a bigger personality. Needs time to mature. Footwork is disastrous, but he seems really committed to correct these errors, according to reports.
Hey MD, I was listening to the Niner Nation podcast today and they had Matt Waldman on and he said he has Josh Reynolds as his #2 WR behind Davis. How did you grade Reynolds? I watched a few of his games but to me I see a 3rd rd pick, but that's nothing in depth. Waldman is usually good at grading prospects, but he's the first one I've seen with Reynolds as a top 2 WR.
Now with Brock gone does that shift our draft picks and we go with a high ranking CB?

I would hope our draft board isn't based on who is on the roster currently and based strictly on each kid being graded.

Now if you're on the clock and you have a CB and G graded the same way then maybe you grab the CB now with Brock gone

Totally agree, for me that's the only time need comes into it. I mean some teams have Don't needs, i.e you have a Franchise QB you don't need to try and get another. We aren't good enough to have any don't needs

I have Reynolds at 8th best WR, which is way higher than many publications. Like him a lot and think he is late-second/early third round value, but will probably be a fourth round pick. Should be discussed more. Definitely in the pack as one of the best. Has a lot of traits that can make him a success

I think Lynch sticks to his board in the first with Thomas or Hooker, but maybe focuses on CB with that early second rounder. Players like Fabian Moreau and Tre-Davious White certainly look like options in the early second (especially if Moreau's injury is healing well).

Both Wilson's: Quincy and Howard should be on the board in the early 3rd. Both are really nice players, so the Niners don't have to reach. Even a stud like Kazee should be on the board in the late 3rd/early4th. The CB cupboard is full this year
Malik Hooker distracting me from watching McMillan tape. The kid is crazy good.

Ha! Mine was the other way around actually, I was watching Hooker and McMillan kept making plays! I didn't like the missed tackle of Gallman against Clemson, but otherwise think he's a good player, solid 3rd Rounder. Not sure he's for us though, would be a great TED in a 3-4, think he'd project as SAM for us, but I'd like one with more pass rush
