People like to argue you don't draft a certain position at a certain draft cause it is too early. I rather like to think of it like when it is said and done, if you had a redraft, how would teams draft then knowing what they know now. If the player is going to be an impact player or multi pro bowler, HOF- does it matter? Give me Thomas, Reed or Lott at number 2. With that said, he fits our scheme, but at the same time, he needs to clean up his angles and tackling. Atlanta did not have that in the SB, if they did, the Pats might not have had a chance.
THIS
I'm so tired of hearing that this position or another was never drafted at number 2 in the draft, blah, blah, blah. You ppl also said that Lynch was a bad hire because no GM without the right experience has ever been hired by an NFL team. We can't live being so afraid of breaking conventional norms.
Malik Hooker...49ers new FS....2017 NFL DRAFT!!!
NO safety end of the day just isn't as important as QB,LT,pass rush, WR, CB...it's just not, you can swing it around to try and fit whatever but it's the truth. People bring up Earl Thomas and how he's the heart of the D, but when Bennett was out for 5 weeks that D allowed 3 20+ games and lost twice.
Why can't Ward move to his natural position? Lynch already said that's the plan so why draft a FS? We just don't have the talent elsewhere to be burning a pick on safety. Trade down sure that changes a lot of things BUT if we don't we need to go with the DE in Thomas.
I think we need to factor in a few other variables in this situation. Our last two first round picks were d-linemen which has an impact, how much money (future $ really) do we want tied to one area of the team. This is a loaded defensive draft (secondary talent galore) and not so great on offense. Worse the consensus is there is really no QB worth the 2nd pick since most need a year on the bench.
If that foster kid didn't go crazy I would have thought maybe him, but then we really need to see where Bowman is at anyway. If he's healthy hes our middle linebacker in the new scheme. If he's not we are shopping next year.
While its true we could pick anyone, I am guessing we don't draft a lineman not named Garret. I was thinking Allen, but I'm sure his shoulder issues scared people off. I also think we skip QB unless they fell in love with one. Maybe we will draft Thomas, but supposedly many say he doesn't exactly fit in anywhere 100%. Sounds like a situational pass rusher to me. If they take him I would be cool with it tho.
I won't be mad if we draft Hooker or Adams. They have serious potential, day 1 starters. If they pan out and are great we could care less that he was picked at 2. And in that defense a dynamic FS just makes passing on it so much harder.
Simply put I am saying we are so bad I just want BPA. A day 1 starter who is solid and we can check off that position for the foreseeable future lol
