Solomon Thomas--Stanford

It's all coachable though. The athletic ability at his size however is something you have to be born with.

He has the passion, he has the intensity and he's a smart kid who can certainly take to coaching. Guy should only get better regardless of where we play him.
Really good discussions all around and TBH, I can have near identical conversations on about 6 players at the #2 right now...like the QB's, there's no clear, no-brainer answer at #2 except Garrett but we can thank Kaepernick for effing us one last time for losing out on him.

Browns can be blamed as well...what was it first and goal at the 2 in OT and they manage to lose 12 yards and settle for a FG then give up a friggin TD drive to the Steelers backups? How embarrassing and yet now they're sitting pretty.

Garrett would've been about as no brainer a move as possible and perfect fit :(

This is why I don't get the "I always root for a win" crowd. I'm sure all of them right now are hoping Garrett somehow falls to us.

That game was absolutely thrown. It was comical actually.

Vic Beasley doesn't play on the weakside. He's their SAM LB that pass rushes in sub packages. He's basically atlanta's bruce irvin.

Seattle used Irvin as another Leo though, just like Atlanta does with Beasley. Certainly not advocating using Thomas like that but just further pointing out his athletic ability.

If Thomas is taken that is where he would play.

I doubt that.

I think Thomas, Armstead, and Buckner would be moved around all over the d-line depending on alignments. Maybe Armstead would be subbed for Mitchell during obvious running situations.

I'm not disputing that Solomon Thomas is a great player with great athleticism.

What I'm disputing is that we will draft him at #2 to play him at LEO. We're either going to use someone with great length or an undersized speed rusher.

You don't put Solomon as a weak side attacker, not enough length or good enough use of hands

Strong side end, 3-4 end, or undersized DT

Cite an example of the perfect 4-3 RE in this defense?

In the draft or the NFL?

I think Solomon Thomas would be excellent at 4-3 DE spot.

I'd also put Willis, Dimick, McKinley in that category.
Let's get him!

Long term I agree with you. I do think in a pinch or while we're seeing what we have and who does what he could play there if we couldn't find someone later in the draft who was a better fit at Leo.

We've all seen guys play different positions early on and then get moved over to where they fit best. Happens a lot with LT prospects when teams may have an ok LT and want to let the young kid work his way in. I believe Dolphins did that with Tunsil last year.

I just think in today's NFL there are two positions and areas of need which stand above all else.

QB is easily at the top. Without a top QB in place your odds of winning games drop significantly unless you have historical talent throughout the rest of the team.

The second is pass rusher. The guy who makes that all important position incredibly uncomfortable.

I don't know if Thomas is the best pass rusher after Garrett but I believe he is the best player who is an excellent pass rusher and terrific vs the run and someone who is willing and capable of being coached up.

Yeah I agree he's not a true LEO...he's a monster on that DL though and I'm warming up to him as the pick.

We can still go for a that LEO pass rusher in the draft someone like Derek Rivers could fill that role in say the 3rd or 4th. He's got burst and crushed the combine. He had 41 sacks while at Youngtown St and will drop because of that and lack of true length.

I could dig this, hopefully, we can get a good read on him, with him being so close in Palo Alto.
