2017 Draft Needs

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline says NFL teams are "salivating over" Washington CB Kevin King's measurables and "King plays to them, physically beating down opponents to defend passes."

King had an interception in Saturday's victory over Arizona State. "Long speed is a concern and pre-draft forty times are critical but as told to me by one insider, King is a typical Seattle Seahawks type of cornerback who will be selected during the second day of the draft," Pauline wrote. The 6-foot-3 1/2, 190-pound King has broken up 10 passes this year.

All franchise changers IMO. Wouldn't mind either one of them at #2. That top 4 will not change for me...

I don't like Peppers that early. He's a great athlete and a good player, but how are you going to draft a S top 5, when he's never intercepted a pass? Thats the most a S can affect a game, and he's never done it.

Agree! He's a great all around player but it is very likely he drops as QBs move up. CBS has Allen and Peppers rated above Garrett, which is also likely to change. Pass rushers and QBs move up, others move down...usually.

Matt Miller has a nice article about sleepers

Trey Hendrickson Florida Atlantic sounds interesting as an edge rusher, seems like a good fit

Nice read. Would like RB Brian Hill from Wyoming
Need to get #2 overall at worst but Chicago is so beat up/bad right now I'm afraid we'll beat them and there goes that...
UNC junior RB Elijah Hood rushed for 56 yards on 11 carries in Friday's 28-21 loss to NC State.

NC State built up a 21-7 halftime lead and extended it to 28-7 by the end of the third quarter, making this game one that wasn't particularly suited to a run-heavy approach for the Tar Heels. The 6-foot, 221-pound Hood has just three 100-yard games to his fair name this year. Maybe because he has received more than 15 carries in a game just twice this season. Hood rushed for 1,463 yards in 14 games last season, scoring 17 touchdowns along the way. He will fall considerably short of both marks in 2016. Indeed, Hood needs 142 yards rushing in UNC's bowl game just to hit 1,000 yards for the current campaign.

He always seems solid to me when I watch them.
This is shaping up to be an exciting draft coming up! The two players mentioned most often for the niners first pick (if it's second)--Garrett or Trubisky. But if Kelly likes a different QB, say a Falk or Mahomes, they may drop back and pick up a couple of extra picks. My crystal ball says--

  1. Garrett if Cleveland doesn't pick him
  2. Trubisky if he's available and Kelly likes him
  3. Trade back to take WR Mike Williams or either ILB Cunningham or Foster...each has his merits and could pair well with Bowman
  4. Additional picks used for LBs, OL, and WRs if they don't pick Williams.

I'm sort of expecting a draft like:
  1. OLB/DL Garrett
  2. WR Corey Davis
  3. QB Mahomes
  4. ILB Beckwith

An NFC West scout says Ohio State redshirt senior C/G Pat Elflein "could have the same fast impact on a[n NFL] team's running game that Zack Martin had in Dallas."

"You are getting a guy who will be great for your locker room and will get the rest of the offensive line on board," he said. "I think he could have the same fast impact on a team's running game that Zack Martin had in Dallas. Safe draft pick to me." Elflein moved from guard to center prior to the season. Martin, of course, moved from tackle to guard when he entered the NFL. Lance Zierlein believes Elflein "has a chance to be a first-round pick."

Love both DBs in Washington
Louisville TE Cole Hikutini accepted an invitation to the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Formerly of Sacramento State and City College of San Francisco, Hikutini has provided Lamar Jackson with an outstanding safety valve. The preseason Mackey Award watch lister has 656 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
An AFC executive says Ohio State redshirt sophomore CB Marshon Lattimore is a first-rounder.

"He's smooth—a good athlete with good ball skills," said the AFC executive. "There's not a lot bad to him. He's a first-rounder." A rangy, physical corner, Lattimore has four picks and nine passes defensed this year. MMQB reported that the industry consensus "is that Lattimore is probably, as it stands, a better prospect than Eli Apple was last season." An NFC area scout assigned to the Buckeyes had this to say: "He's big, strong, athletic, good ball skills. But you still feel like you need to see more, because he only has 11 career starts and they rotate three guys. You want to see his speed. I don't know if he'll run 4.4, and he hasn't been tested like he will this weekend."
ESPN's Todd McShay writes that Ohio State redshirt sophomore S Malik Hooker is "either the best-coached safety in college football or the Ed Reed of FBS."

We'll go with college football's Ed Reed. And we aren't alone. Last month, an NFL area scout told NFL Media that he compares Hooker to Reed. Hooker has six interceptions this season, his first as a starter, including three that were returned for touchdowns. One of those pick-sixes took place Saturday against Michigan. Hooker is eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft if he chooses to declare early.
One pretty big need we have that very few are discussing is a receiving threat out of the backfield.

Chip's offense is predicated on using the RB as a weapon out of the backfield to stretch the defense. This is why there are so few checkdown options in his offense. To really maximize what Chip wants to do, we need a RB with great hands, route-running ability, and physical traits that are a problem for LBs. Basically a Darren Sproles/James White type. The Raiders run a lot of Chip's offense, and they brought in 2 guys that fit this mold(Deandre Washington and Jalen Richard).

One guy I love who checks the boxes is Elijah McGuire. I think he would kill it with Chip. He's one of the RBs with natural receiving skills in the draft.
