Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

His completion percent is 63% this year and he plays in an offense with easier concepts. A lot of quick drop backs, slants, and curl routes. When he does have to throw it down field his accuracy has been off this year. He'll make the brilliant pass, but that's what he's supposed to do as a top rated QB. His story this year for me is the plays he didn't make. He's missed on a lot of throws this year that could have given Clemson a lot more comfortable margins of victory. Last year Clemson only played in 4 one score games. They've already matched that total in this year alone and it's not like they've played a bunch of killer opponents. Watson has almost all of his offense returning in addition to Mike Williams who should be a top WR prospect when he declares from a neck injury and he's still taken somewhat of a step back this year.

I wouldn't hate Watson as Niner, but I'm not as enamored.

Is chip gonna ask him to make all these tight window throws? He runs basically the same offense. Those killer WRs have all dropped a s**t ton of balls as well (go look at the #s). What kind of stats you looking for??

It's cool you can have you opinion there will always be questions about qb prospects, but just because he's not smoking teams by 40 pts a game doesn't mean he can't play qb....he throws for 5 TDs and has 400 yards of offense vs Louisville and people still hated on him lol. One thing I love about him is he wins end of the day he has found ways to win...his defense hasn't helped him that's for sure.

He also had 3 INT's that game though. Bad throws on his part. That was also another game where he didn't capitalize on some throws he should have made. If it was past 15 yards it seemed like he was underthrowing or overthrowing everyone that game. You're right on his WR's dropping passes, I think Clemson is up there in drops. I wouldn't mind drafting him, but I'm definitely not as high as I used to be on him.

Did you watch that game? One INT bounced off a WRs hands and other the wr slipped on his route. They weren't bad throws. Sure he hasn't been as accurate on deep throws but his numbers last yr were out of this world. He's still playing good football.

I don't think it's fair at all to put Clemson's close games on him exclusively. The team has had 9 turnovers (plus a 4th down stop on the goalline vs NCST) combined in the games vs NCST and LOU, or both of them would have been blowouts. Now he did account for some of those turnovers himself, but the vast majority were not on him. Clemson had nearly 500 yards of offense and 30 first downs vs NCST despite losing Wayne Gallman on the first drive (the had very gaudy offensive totals vs LOU as well). They dominated on offense apart from the crushing turnovers in the redzone that kept the game close (and Watson certainly made a mistake in misreading the coverage on his pick six).

How did he respond to that pick six? He completed his next 14 passes in a row, setting a personal best. That's what he does. He absolutely did miss one open bomb to Deon Cain in the first half, but his receivers also dropped numerous passes despite him going 39-52 for the game. Go look at the TD he threw in OT...just a perfectly placed laser that came about because he and the receiver noticed earlier in the game that NCST's defense was playing a particular formation a certain way.

I get that Clemson's offense has not been what it should be, but most of that has come down to simple drops and turnovers. Literally the only thing I am questioning with Watson right now is his touch on the deep ball. He put on a lot of muscle over the offseason, and it seems like he is sailing some throws he normally drops in a bucket. No idea if the two are related, but even with that he's played very well so far this season.
With the 2nd pick in the 2017 NFL draft the San Francisco 49ers select QB from Clemson Deshaun Watson...!!!!

I can live with this for sure...Myles is a better prospect but he's gonna go #1. Watson just knows how to win games end of the day.

Miles might be the better prospect, but we definitely need a QB without fail. We can rebuild the team around Watson as the franchise QB which makes perfect sense.
This dude any good?

No doubt I've been on the qb in the 1st bandwagon but I will say there are a couple intriguing qb prospects in the late 1st and 2nd rounds(been able to watch more of them) and I wouldn't hate if they traded for Jimmy G for a 2nd (nothing more than that though).

If we are top three I'd been fine with one of the 3 in Kizer/Watson/Garrett BUT the qb positions must be taken care of!

Top 2 pick, franchise qb good?
no.

mitch trubisky will surpass watson closer to the draft. he simply has more tools and traits that translate to the NFL, and he doesn't panic like watson if you take away his first read. not to mention he has an NFL body with no serious injury history.

Lol trubisky has started half a season at UNC. Pump the brakes.

Hard to say... not many picks are no brainer top 2 franchise guys there's always gonna be ?

That said I like he's style of play with this offense. He's just finds ways too win.
