Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

It's crazy how much fans and media overrates first round picks. As if championship rosters were built by gathering lots of first round players.
Who are the top talents on this team?
Fred Warner: 3rd rounder
George Kittle: 5th rounder
Nick Bosa: 1st round (#2 overall who you can only get if you keep sucking ass)
Brandon Aiyuk: 1st round
Deebo Samuel: 2nd round
Greenlaw: 5th round
Trent Williams: Former first you got from a trade
Other first have been Solly, Foster, Mike M. How about Cleveland blowing 11 first rounders in 5 straight years? Or Seattle who blows every first rounder so they decided to trade them away for Adams? The Rams roster is still excellent and they haven't had a first round pick since 2016.
Keep Adam Peters at all cost and trade those first for an ELITE level QB who is 25 years old. Do it and with the talent on this team you're not drafting top 15 not even top 20 again.
First round picks are overrated and also expensive. Period.

okay, but Watson was a first round pick though. And Kyle could have had him, but he was like naaaaah, I'm good. Kirk Cousins baby.
They can't get rid of Watson. Who are they going to bring in?

Irrelevant. The point is he could do a move to fix that mistake now.

Well, they got rid of the best wide receiver in the NFL and brought nothing in. The Texans are good at f**king themselves over. I say we offer them Jimmy Happyfeet and a Big Mac.
If we are going to give a lot of 1st round picks for Watson we must keep Adam Peters no matter what even is that means parting ways with John Lynch to promote Peters to GM.

What about Garoppolo + 2 1st round picks + Deebo

Houston, you have a problem.. so take what I'm giving you !!!

Hard to go back thru this thread. I was a strong advocate of taking him #2 if they couldn't trade back. Huge fan of his from his Clemson days and continue to root for him in Houston.

One can dream of a redemption story, but still wish we can turn back the clock and draft this kid.

Same here. I remember thinking to myself we get Myles Garrett or Watson at #2. We're golden either way. I understand Shanny's thinking, and of course we can always nit pick but missing on Watson really hurts since I fell in love with him at Clemson. That 2017 draft was stacked, to only come out of it with Kittle (thank God lol) is crazy for where we were drafting. I'm honestly all for letting Jimmy G be the QB next season but if there is ANY chance of getting Watson you do it.

The strength of our team last year that took us to the Super Bowl was Nick Bosa (1st round), Arik Armstead (1st round), DeForest Buckner (1st round), and Dee Ford (Chiefs 1st round, that we traded a 2nd for).

You bring up our mid-round successes--we draft well in the mid rounds, but for every Fred Warner and George Kittle, there's C.J. Beathard and Trent Taylor. Likewise in the first round, for every Nick Bosa, there's Solomon Thomas. For every Brandon Aiyuk, there's A.J. Jenkins. You hit, you miss.
You bring up the Browns and Seahawks... They don't seem to scout well in the first round. But take a team like the Ravens under Ozzie Newsome in the late 90s and early 2000s. They drafted Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, Chris McAllister, Duane Starks, Jamal Lewis, Travis Taylor, Todd Heap, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs. That's what franchises aim for. When we say build through the draft, that's the prime example of what we're looking for.

All in all, the draft is a crapshoot, but there are franchises that do well like Ozzie Newsome on the Ravens and some that do poorly, like the Browns. But the general expectation from first and second rounders is that you get guys who are Pro Bowl players, or at least starters. Your mid-rounders tend to be role players, or raw players who you hope develop. And your late rounders are depth players. Sometimes you get gems like George Kittle.

To say that 1st rounders are overrated isn't a very nuanced statement. I will say this though. Pro Bowlers and starters in the league are more commonly found in the first round than the mid rounds than the late rounds. That's a fact. Just because draft gems like George Kittle in the 5th round and busts like A.J. Jenkins in the 1st happen, the likelihood of finding a starter is more likely in the first than the later rounds.

And one more thing... The report for Deshaun Watson's asking price being three first rounders and a couple seconds... that's the starting price. Given how highly coveted NFL QBs are, and he's an elite level QB that's not even in his prime... I'm sure there's a team that will overpay that. It's unprecedented to have such a player possibly available for trade. It's going to be a ridiculous trade that will make/break the Texans and that other team for the next five years.
i wanted Watson so bad in that draft too.. like I've never wanted the niners to draft someone as bad as I wanted Watson.

I'm still a Jimmy G believe but I do love me some watson

Agree. I will say draft picks are overrated in terms of talent but salary cap wise they are a saving grace. Good teams only hit on 2 or 3 of their draft picks each year while most teams are lucky to find 1 solid starter in a draft class when looking 3-4 years down the road.
Watson's starting price is just a way of saying he's not getting traded.

Nobody paying that.

There is an unnamed source that says three 1st round picks, three 2nd round picks and a player is the starting point for any trade discussion
