It's obvious going over their selections throughout this regime and others they don't have a clue.

Or find coaches who can use the guys they get. Put Ellington and Patton on the Steelers...is there any doubt that they would be productive players there?

Its not just about drafting the talent, its also aboout coaching and developing the talent and this team has flat out sucked balls at that when it comes to the WR position.

It would be really great if we could acquire 2-3 extra draft picks to give Baalke room to move...

Not sure this is correct! Patton was thrown around like a rag doll in his rookie season, but seems to be adding bulk and strength. Ellington was used on ST and did well, but was marginal as a receiver. With Boldin, Crabtree, Johnson and Lloyd ahead of them it doesn't seem reasonable to expect them to get many reps. I think the passing problems were much more related to scheme, playcall and QB ability to read Ds.

The whole "Patton was thrown around like a rag doll" thing is a massive exaggeration. He got sent flying once when a Seattle defensive back hit him with a cheapshot and ended up getting flagged for it and people somehow have built up this legend that the guy is a threat to fall over at any moment. Odell Beckham did like 7 reps at the Combine and nobody talks about how much he gets pushed around, even though he's slightly smaller than Patton.

He made some nice catches when he was healthy and had the opportunity to play, on a team like Green Bay or Seattle I could see him doing very well. Ellington showed natural ability as a slot receiver, still raw but a guy who consistently showed he could get open.

I do think that had the 49ers drafted a guy like Beckham, Landry, Matthews or Moncrief, none of them would have come close to the success that they experienced with their actual teams and people would still be bringing up other receivers as examples of better players that the 49ers could have drafted.

OK....let's go defensive line. Then, would love Lockett or Dorsett later. Or maybe actually see what Ellington and Patton have to offer. They also looked great in college, the last time they really touched the football with any regularity.
Don't get us wrong. We are certainly not opposed to a WR-pick early, i.e. first 3 rounds. Even if we retain Boldin, SJ, Patton and Ellington, we still need an additional guy because:
1)we don't have any deep threat at WR at all. Ellington seems to come close to that but he is not a true speedster.
2)Boldin won't be here forever. The guy will turn 35 in October.
3)Quinton and Ellington are unproven and we don't know whether they will be helpful in the future at all. There is always a risk of a bust.

so, again, yes we need a WR but one in the first three or even four rounds should do it. Then, we would have 5 WRs. If we would pick another one high, he could be the 6th guy and I would say that the 6th would be inactive on gamedays very often. Not very useful for anyone.

I think one more receiver, preferably a deep threat guy like you mentioned would suffice.

1. Boldin
2. Johnson
3. Rookie, Patton, Ellington
4. Rookie, Patton, Ellington
5. Rookie, Patton, Ellington

You still have one more slot if you want a guy to develop or contribute on special teams the way Osgood good.

Not what I was referring to but that was an extreme example. What was more consistant is that he was knocked off his route. If the QB can't count on a receiver fighting through defenders the timing is thrown off. Go back and watch games when he was in and you will see that he often just couldn't get to his route through the defender. What I liked about Patton last year was that he seemed to be much stronger, or perhaps Boldin taught him how to be crafty? Ellington was much more effective as a rookie.

But again, my main point is that they had four veteran receivers ahead of them and weren't likely to play much. Not many teams would bench a 1,000 yard veteran to play an untested rookie.

Yep, either a ST-guy like Osgood or a 5-7th-rounder or even an UDFA.

I mean, given the collegiate offensive systems, I assume to have a deep WR-class in almost every year. Therefore, we don't need to pick two guys in the same draft high at all.

In general, as stated several times, we don't have a pressing need at WR as long as we retain Boldin and SJ in the first place. Both of them are very good and proven WRs. I don't get the rush at all.
I can only repeat my personal opinion: we need d-line help more badly than some of you guys think. Way too many question marks over there, if you ask me (RayMac gone, Ian injury-prone, Justin is 35 years old, Carradine???, any other guy???). Given the impact by the d-line on the whole defensive play, we should not risk anything there. Try to go for quality in the FA and get quality in the draft as well.
I wish we could get a quick little posession receiver like Edleman/Welker.

Patton and Ellington could easily develop into crafty receivers with some time. Patton improved and Ellington has the ability to make people miss! Amendola and Edelman are in their seventh year, LaFell is in his sixth.

we have one

we just never used him

please use bruce ellington jeep. the blue print has been the same the entire time: quickness and speed vs seattle.

That`s a valid point, now hopefuly with the new coaching staff Patton and Ellington and a future rookie WR will get a chance to play and be properly coached...yeah Pheonix they would be saying that about the wideouts.

This. Ellington and Patton fit well, both quick off the line, good hands, just need a chance to play.
