Please lets start off by not saying, "Kaep sucks and anyone can be better than him".
I don't know what high round picks are legitimately projected to do well in the NFL. But I have seen some great qb play in the Bowl games and this season in general. With that said, we always need to be looking to improve at all positions, especially the most important one.
Kaep has got some talent, but Im thinking so much about improvement, and Im worried that Kaep doesn't have everything it takes to win Superbowls, and I really would like to have some 'Joe Montana/Aaron Rodgers' talent leading us.
There are some good quarterbacks coming out and you guys know more than me about the talent, but could we actually target a qb in this draft who can take Kaeps job in year 1--or developed to take over longterm? Or should we pass over the position and grab a vet, because no one this year is skilled enough to be a quality starter?

Do we have a quarterback in our range who projects to better than Kaep?

Nope. I like Mannion a lot but I'm not gonna say he's projected to be better than Kap

Bryce Petty looks really good in this bowl game, don't know where he projects but would love to draft him after the first round.

The answer is nobody knows, but is worth a try, it doesn't cost anything anyway. We just have to keep drafting QBs until we get it right.
I am not keen on the vet free agent route, one, there aren't many good ones and the better ones are going to be expensive, besides it will only be a stopgap measure anyway.

He is killing Michigan State right now, 21/32, 345 yards and 2 TDs.

I would say probably not, I think Kaep deserves at least 1 more year to prove himself seeing as he's still young and also see what he can do with a coordinator and coach that can let him do what he does best and not try to make him out to be something he's not. I personally think he's best when we run the rock 30+ times a game and let Kaep make plays down field off of play-action where he rolls out of the pocket. Just my opinion

26/37, 440 yards and 3 TDs now and still with 1:28 left in the 3rd.

Been on the Bryce Petty bandwagon since last season. People knock his accuracy, but a guy who's put up 59 TDs to only 9 INTs the last 2 years, with a career 62% completion percentage, seems pretty damn accurate to me. Plus he has good enough mobility (20 career rushing TDs). Great character. Great teammate. Tough (cracked 2 bones in his back and only missed 1 game).
He's projected about the 3rd, but I could see him move up. He's a similar player to Blake Bortles. I wouldn't be upset if we grabbed him in the 2nd. I think we need to draft a QB early anyways (said it last year too). It provides competition for Kaep and insurance also.
Won't happen, but in my fantasy world, I wish we'd hire Art Briles (Baylor HC) as HC. His offense would help utilize all of Kaepernick's strengths. And having Petty as a backup would be an added bonus.

Cotton Bowl record for yards. And he's killed it against good teams the past 2 years; OU, TCU, WVU, Central Florida in last year's bowl, and now MSU. Kids a stud and I feel he gets knocked cause of the offense he plays in and that he doesn't "act like a star".

I don't think he will last till the 3rd, just way too many teams needing QBs. But, heck if he is available in the 3rd, I would grab him. I am thinking WR (not sure who just yet) in the 1st, Melvin Gordon in the 2nd. I don't think I can justify picking Petty over Gordon in the 2nd unless we make a compromise to pick Petty in the 2nd and Duke Johnson in the 3rd if he is still around.

I think Gordon will be gone before we pick in the 2nd. Plus, imo, a backup QB is 1 play away from being more important than a RB. Look at the Cards, they have Ryan Lindley starting. I'd puke if that was us. Yet stud RBs can be found anywhere from 1st round-UDFA.Originally posted by Rascal:Originally posted by Travisty13:Been on the Bryce Petty bandwagon since last season. This. People will fall in love with guys like Mannion, but he's got some real limitations, Petty I think is even more limited, he put up big numbers in a gimmick offense, but so did RG3 in that same offense and he was a much better prospect. Then you have guys like Bo Wallace which just horrendous accuracy and decision making issues. Not really a fan of most of these guys. I like Mannion and Grayson outside of the top QB's.
As far as overall goes, I think Winston can easily be the best QB out of this draft and it isn't even close, He's a true pocket quarterback than has all the tools to excel but you just don't know what's going on upstairs, he's also the guy I'd pick to be most likely to implode and be out of the NFL in 3 seasons or less.
