We need a CB who is able to locate the ball and make a play on it..... This superceeds any other need

Agreed. I don't know enough about the draft this year, but it sounds like we might be in a good spot to get a top WR.
Regarding CB, I think it depends on either Cox or Cully getting resigned. If we lose both, than CB certainly climbs the chart. Cook is a FA as well, but he's more of a depth guy imo.
I think I wanted to hint that we have way more needs than we think we have, therefore it should be BPA in general, though a need-based approach in particular given that we don't need an additional OLB, QB or Safety.
I would still resist to take the CB on the "might be picked in the first"-list because Baalke is REALLY good at finding DBs late or in FA. And even the best CBs are burnt all day long if the QB is good enough and the pass-rush sucks.
To be honest, I think that this is the least important position on defense compared to other positions and the needed attributes there.

Bingo!!!
The defense has the pass-rushers, DE's and NT, all they need is a CB that can play on an island. I also think Safety will be a need in the 3rd-7th rounds, Bethea seems pretty soft and doesn't scare anyone.
If Danny Shelton happen to fall in our lap, it's a no-brainer, don't make the same mistake Donahue did in 2004 passing on Vince Wilfork.

In particular at Safety, we are fine. And with Ward, we got Whitner's successor already on the team.
Therefore:
calm down, buddy

My little opinion draft needs are
first tier - DE/DT, OT, QB We need a good young QB who can push kap for playing time. We need a OT because J Martin is horrible. Kwame Harris was better than J Martin. At least Kwame could run block. Concussions are scary, A Davis is a big question mark now. DE is my biggest need. J Smith got old really fast. Mcdonald isn't what he used to be. I am not sure what we have in Dial or Tank. I think we need one healthy, young, eager DE who wants to come in and take somebody's starting job.
next level - CB, WR, RB, TE
We are hurting at DB, when has cully stayed healthy? This year WR isn't a problem. I don't see paying for crabs. I like crabs but we don't have a qb who can get the ball to him on a regular basis to justify a bigger contract. We can get the same production out of a cheaper WR at a much lower cost than what crabs is going to ask. We need another TE who can stay healthy and or catch the football. I like celek and carrier. Mcdonald can take a hike and I really don't care is Davis is in a 49er uniform next year.
bringing up the rear - OG, LBs, ST
Next year we will have kilgore and Marcus Martin. Martin might push kilgore out despite how martin played at times this year. He is only 21 which blows my mind. Looney played better and better in the absence of boone. Assuming boone coming back we have kilgore, martin and looney fighting for two spots on the line. We have quality depth there.

Cully and Cox are FA, Brock sucks oops sorry, is inconsistent. Dontae Johnson is a bright spot so that's one. Ward is horrible as a NCB he should be a Safety. Cook although pretty decent is another one that's gonna be a free agent. Reaser and Acker are unknown commodities.
Sure I'll stay calm that's of course until reality hits.

So smart guy who do you think will step right in and be that spark on offense, I could've sworn all the pissing and moaning has been about coaching.

This is the duo here.
Anquan Boldin and Stevie Johnson would start. Quinton Patton, Kevin White, Bruce Ellington, and Phillip Dorsett backing them up. We're set at receiver for the longterm with lots of young talent and veteran leadership. As for TE, I think we might actually be ok. Derek Carrier looked good. We have Trey Milliard who will be available. I don't know what Vernon Davis's deal is, but I'd genuinely like to see open competition for the starting TE spot. We'll see if Vance McDonald has any fire in him. I like Kevin White in the first, Duke Johnson in the second (we may be able to get him in the third, who knows with how running backs drop these days), and another DE for Jim Tomsula to work with. If we can get Duke in the third, then I'd go with Shawn Oakman for our second pick. Phillip Dorsett in the 4th. After that, BPA all the way.

We need talented players, period. The biggest need I see are at WR, DT, DE and CB. I think the existing CB corps is not going to perform nearly at the same level next year.

I get the feeling we won't be resigning any of our own high priced guys. If we let these guys walk:
Iupati
Crabtree
Lloyd
Culliver
Cox
Gore
We are opening up some holes at WR, RB, and CB. Additionally, there is talk of cutting Brooks, Justin Smith's eventual retirement, and a handful of role players that will also be on the market next year. If we go with the premise that we won't sign any of our free agents, then these are the units that will need the most attention:
#1 - Wide Receiver
Current: Boldin, Johnson, Ellington, Patton
Analysis - Boldin has stiff armed father time long enough. He is only signed for another year and it would be foolish to expect much more from him. Patton has rarely seen the field because of the talent in front of him, so we don't know what we have in him. Still, he is on the small side and if he had impressed in practice he might have broken through by now. Ellington is a serviceable return man, but hasn't shown much of anything else. Johnson is set to be the #1 WR next year. He looked fantastic early on this year. I think he could be that again. Still, we need a real playmaker at this position. The team desperately wanted ODB in last year's draft. We need to find a way to get a top guy this year.
#2 - Running Back
Current: Carlos Hyde, Trey Millard, Bruce Miller, Kendall Hunter?
Analysis - THis is probably the weakest roster spot on the team. It's ironic, because I thought that was going to be the strongest going into the season. Gore continues to age, Hyde struggled with lack of carries and poor line play, Lattimore couldn't recover, and Hunter's career is in the balance. SO now what do we have? Many of us would be angry if we let Gore go, but it is the right thing to do. I think Hyde could have had a much bigger year if the team had been more committed to splitting carries. As long as the coaching staff allows Gore to be out there on 80% of the plays, this team will suffer. I do believe the team will be better with Hyde as the workhorse. Miller is still a solid FB and Millard is an unknown with the potential to be a dangerous hybrid or he might never recover from his injury. We cannot count on Hunter to get back on the field. Two major injuries in three years. I will root for him, but certainly not count on him. We need to get a RB soon in this draft.
#3 - Quarterback
Current: Colin Kaepernick
Analysis - I am still a believer in Kaepernick. There aren't many of us left, but I firmly believe that with the right coaching and system he can go back to being a dangerous QB. His leadership abilities have been called into question and that is the biggest concern. Who is to say what is in a man's heart? We will see, but it is definitely not time to abandon ship. Still, hedging our bets is a smart play. Gabbert may get a chance somewhere else and Johnson will probably be there for us if we want him. What we really need is a young guy to groom while we see if Kaepernick can get it back.
#4 - Cornerback
Current: Tramaine Brock, Dontae Johnson, Kenneth Acker, Keith Reaser, Jimmie Ward*
Analysis - The one thing that could make this position group our top priority is Ed Donatell. He has shown an uncanny ability to take guys that were throw aways and turn them into studs (Cox, Brock, Tarell Brown, Cook etc.) If Donatell is back on this staff, I am comfortable with this group getting a mid round pick and a few value free agents. If we have a whole new defensive staff, I would like to see us address this need quicker. Brock has shown the ability to be an above average CB when he is healthy. Ward was learning, but he made some great plays. He will most likely be the NCB/Safety again. Johnson has played well all year. Acker and Reaser are unknowns with good potential.
#5 - Tight End
Current: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Derek Carrier
Analysis - No position on this team has reflected the bad season more than this one. VD has disappeared, McDonald showed little improvement before being injured, and Carrier showed a few flashes before ending up on the IR as well. Some question whether this is the end for Vernon. I don't think so. I think Vernon can still be a stud in the right circumstances. He was never the go-up-and-get-it-over-two-guys player. He was the speed guy that could beat one on one coverage. Now that teams don't fear our run game, they can zone the middle of the field rendering him ineffective. If we can get back to smashing the football down the opposing team's throats, we will see Vernon breaking free on play action again. Vance gets a pass on this year but will have to win his job in training camp. Carrier, if healthy, could take it from him if he shows he can block in the run game. We need to bring in a guy to push everyone here.
#5 - Defensive Line
Current: Justin Smith, Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Ray McDonald, Quinton Dial, Tank Carradine, Kaleb Ramsey*
Analysis - One of the underrated story lines this year has been how well this group has played despite injuries and controversy. McDonald is playing much better now that he is no longer in the spotlight, Justin Smith still brings it and the young guys are showing signs of improvement. Dial has really been solid in the run game after taking over at NT and Carradine is finally seeing the field and getting a few sacks. Ramsey is a long shot, but he is not needed right away. We could definitely use some young blood here, but this is not an immediate need. SMith and McDonald will be solid for at least another year, Carradine will continue to develop, Dial is a solid rotational player right now, and Dorsey/Williams will be healthy again.
#6 - Outside Linebacker
Current: Aldon Smith, Aaron Lynch, Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier
Analysis - On paper we have three starting caliber OLBs and one young guy who hasn't done much. The concern is Brooks. He has been a problem all year and he might end up getting cut to save money. A starting tandem of Aldon and Lynch would be a great pass rush, but we would have little depth behind them. Skuta would be a solid option to bring back, but since my premise has us letting everyone walk, we should address this position somewhere in this draft.
#7 - Inside Linebacker
Current: Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Chris Borland, Nick Moody
Analysis - I just can't wait to see our studs back in the middle of the defensive. Borland was a pleasant surprise, but Willis and Bowman are HOF caliber guys. With Borland rounding out the top three of the depth chart, this position looks solid for now. Moody didn't look great against Seattle, but as the fourth ILB, I am good. Still, we could bring a guy in to push him and offer special teams skills.
#8 - Offensive Tackle
Current: Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Jonathan Martin
Analysis - This team missed Anthony Davis more than they thought they would. Davis is a road grading blocker in the run game and can shut down pass rushers on his side. I worry about his health, but if he is fit for next season the team has bookend tackles again. Martin was mediocre. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't nearly good enough. We could use more talent in this group, but I still think Alex Boone can be an above average tackle if needed. In fact, Boone and Aldon Smith need to be targeted this offseason for extensions. If we extend Aldon we can save money for 2015 and Boone is far more valuable than Iupati. Boone is the best OG and swing tackle on this team.
#9 - Offensive Guard
Current: Alex Boone, Joe Looney, Brandon Thomas, Dillon Farrell
Analysis - As I said, I think Boone should be our target for an extension. He is the best guard on this team and deserves to get paid. Looney and Thonas can battle it out to replace Iupati and I think both are capable of handling the position better. Farrell is a wild card and probably projects better at center.
#10 - Center
Current: Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin, Dillon Farrell
Analysis - We are set at this position. Kilgore will be back and healthy, Martin will have experience going into training camp and even Farrell was decent when he had to step in. No reason to waste a pick here.
* I forgot to include Safety. With Reid, Bethea, and Ward, I don't see a big need here. I think Reid and Bethea were off there game at times this year, but an upgrade at starter probably isn't coming. I would slot this position in around #7-8. Get a young guy who can special teams. McCray also made some nice special teams plays this year. Could he be a guy to groom?

Pretty good comprehensive assessment of where the team stands now. I actually feel good about our receivers going into next season. I'm hoping we do not sign or trade for any veterans this offseason and just run with Stevie Johnson and Anquan Boldin as our most experienced guys next season. Then adding in two rookies and we should be good to go going forward. I expect better use of our guys in 2015 and our receivers actually being played to their strengths.
I think Trey Millard is supposed to be used in that Delanie Walker role, so I'd include him with the tight ends. We didn't see nearly as much as Carlos Hyde as I would've liked, but I have seen enough to feel confident in his ability to be a solid running back at worse in the future. I'd still sign Frank Gore because he wants to be here, can still play, and I wouldn't rely on Kendall Hunter (as much as i like him). Could we probably move on without him? I believe so, in terms of offensive production. We may even be more productive. But this team, in terms of veteran presence and leadership on offense is not ready to move on from Frank Gore. A draft pick is in order however. Duke Johnson is the guy IMO. We should also pick up a bruiser as an UDFA to put on the practice squad.
Spot on with the assessment of Kap. I'm not sure what the thought process was with Kap this year. But in terms of the offense that was run, they didn't do much to help him. I do want some better talent behind him, not just to push him, but also because I have no faith in Blaine Gabbert. Some are calling for this player to be drafted as high as the first round (absurd). I don't want a QB targeted higher than the 5th. Better scheme on offense or better play from Kap and this is a playoff team. Give us both and we're a Super Bowl contender.
I do disagree that defensive line help not being an immediate need. Although I think Tank and Dial have played well when given opportunities, the drop off will be noticeable when Justin Smith retires. I want another DE in the rotation and think this could be a target early in the draft.
At offensive tackle, once we get out salary cap in order, I'd like to sign a veteran that could back up both tackle positions. Jonathan Martin is ok, but after a year here, I'm expecting better in 2015.
I'm probably with you in the minority in wanting Boone back in 2015 and possibly long term. I really believe something wasn't right this year with him as well as other players and I'd expect them to return to form in 2015.

I agree with the underlined. This is why I have an OT much much higher on the need list than OG. I really think DE/DT is the biggest need because of the potential drop off if Justin retires or continues to slow down. Justin and Ray are getting old. Although Justin is good today, he isn't the player he was last year or from the year before. A close second is the QB position for me. We need to get another quality QB on the roster in case kap doesn't work out.
