2015 49ers Draft Needs

I think the same...we need a dependable backup at QB. a pick in the 3rd round is possible imho.

OL - Kilgore or Martin will be the C of the future most likely. A lot will depend on if we get Boone extended and if Iupati is re-signed but we also have Looney, Brandon Thomas to compete for those 2 guard spots if both are gone. Even if we re-sign one of those guys we shouldn't need help with Looney/Thomas winning the other spot. If we lose both it might be a high need if Looney and Thomas can't take over both spots. 3rd Tackle could be another need.
o-line is always a need.
CB Depth - Culliver, Cox and Cook will all be FA's after this year but I don't see us losing all 3 of them. I expect Culliver back and re-signed long term as soon as his legal issues clear up. Brock, Ward, Johnson and Morris or Acker will be under contract for next year. So unless we lose all 3 it's probably not going to be a big need or a need at all. I see it being Brock, Culliver, Ward, Johnson, Cox/Cook, Morris/Acker.
we will find another good CB-backup on day 3.
WR Depth - Crabtree, Lloyd, Osgood are FA's after this year. Even if we lose all 3 (or the other 2 are cut before) that still leaves us Boldin, Johnson, Ellington, Patton so we would still have a solid group. It would probably be a mid round need then. If we re-sign Crabtree it's not a need at all.
imho, our wr coprs seems to be stacked, especially if Crabtree extends. Crabtree, Boldin as possession receivers, Ellington/Johnson as quick guys, Patton as everything and PERHAPS Washington as a long-term project.
RB Depth - This will depend on if Gore and Hunter are back and how Lattimore does. The only way I see this being a need is if we lose Gore and Hunter and Lattimore never plays. That would leave Hyde and James. I see at least 1 of Lattimore, Gore or Hunter being back though.
from supposed no-need before the last draft to a total need in next year. Gore won't do it forever, LMJ is another type of player anyway. Let's wait and see what Hyde can REALLY do. Hunter will be given another chance next summer. There are a lot of question marks behind Lattimore.
4th S - We have yet to see who will be our 4th and 5th? safety but Reid, Bethea and Ward will likely be 1-3. I think we need to draft a #4/5 in the mid rounds next year. Someone who can play ST on a high level as well.
a very minor need if Reid, Ward and Bethea are still here and alive next year.

7th DL? - McDonald, Dorsey, Smith, Williams, Carradine, Dial, TJE/DP?. TJE is a FA after this year and I don't think Okoye or Ramsey are the long term answer. We have 6 DL signed so if w plan on keeping 7 then we can draft one in the late rounds to compete with TJE if we re-sign him or maybe Okoye/Ramsey.
d-line is always a need.

TE - Vernon is signed through 2015, McDonald should be our long term #2 and Carrier will likely be our #3. Unless we plan on upgrading our 3 it's not a need. If we would take one it would be a late round pick.
So, Vernon will enter his contract year next year and you assume that we don't have a need at TE then? I assume the complete opposite.
OLB - Brooks, Smith, Lemonier, Lynch and Skuta if re-signed. We have Aldon through 2015 so after that season if we can't get him sign long term then we have a major need but until then not a need.
True that. Though, you can never have too many pass-rushers.
ILB - Bowman, Willis, Borland, Moody/Skov or Wilhoite if re-signed. If we cut Moody/Skov and they are gone and then Wilhoite leaves it could be a need otherwise no unless we want to upgrade #4 ILB.
we need another outstanding ILB who could take over for Willis or Bowman because their contracts are way too heavy, imho.

We will ABSOLUTELY need CB's. I don't care how these rookies pan out.. we will need CB's for sure. We already need them now.
I'd love to see us use a first-round pick on a beast DL. We have Tank, Dorsey, and McDonald; we need some rotational depth to keep everyone fresh and always keep the pressure on.

1st- CB or DE
2nd one that is not filled in round 1
3rd back up qb for four years
4th- versatile OL who can play guard or Ot
5TH rb
6TH- olb
7TH- KICKER
1st NT
2nd CB
3rd SS
1. CB or WR
2. NT or G - Iupati will be gone and if Boone gets traded and Looney isn't very good we may need a G. I know we need a NT but why take a player who won't even see the field more than 40% of the time or less in a rotation with Dorsey in the 1st round?
3. S or QB - Saftey depends on the play of Bethea and Reid if he gets through this season concussion free.
4. T or more D- line help.
5. RB
6. LB
7. K
Kicker is one I didn't think of but if Dawson does well he is signed for next year and I would think he would be back. If he does bad then I see us going out and getting another veteran. We have been big on veteran kickers for decades, been a long time since we relied on a rookie kicker. Maybe Chandler? Sure we have had guys like Schmidt and Tavecchio as camp legs but none start. I don't think Baalke (or the past GM's) will put stock into a rookie kicker. Not on a team that is championship caliber. Some playoff caliber teams like the Ravens did it but most that did it didn't have anything to lose.

Communist, personally I wouldn't put 95 mil into middle linebackers as they usually have a good success rate coming from college. It's one of the easier positions to draft. That being sad Willis and Bowman aren't ordinary and are the rare exception to spending that much on 2 MLBs. It would have been or will be hard for us to get rid of either one of them. I hate having all that tied up into MLB but they are also 2 of our best players on our team. Plus both will restructure or take cuts as we need them too. If anything I could see us needing a 4th ILB if we don't re-sign Wilhoite and Moody/Skov aren't that guy. As for TE it will depend on where we are at after the season with Vernon. If it looks like we can re-sign him then we would be drafting for a #3 TE. If it doesn't look like we can extend him then maybe we think about drafting a guy to replace him. He would be the #2 or 3 for a year then take over after Vernon left. Then again maybe they think McDonald could be that guy if Vernon left. We could also get one in the 1st/2nd in the 2016 draft if Vernon leaves; we don't necessarily have to have one in the 2015 draft to take over. As for RB that's one of the biggest question marks. I think Gore will be back 1 more year for cheap but that's not guaranteed by any means. Lattimore is a question mark, I don't think James re-signs after 2015 and Hyde I think is one guy we can count on for the future. Also, depends on if Hunter is back. We have no idea with RB right now.

And guys I'm not ruling out DE or CB in the 1st by any means. I wouldn't rule G, WR, RB, etc either. We have a lot of options. Thanks to all who have replied, hopefully we can keep up the discussion throughout the year and after the season. A lot will change between now and May.... guys will step up, guys will under perform, we will lose guys to free agency and bring others in. Side note I was going to do a 2015 49ers Free Agency one in the Free Agency forum but I'm going to wait until after cuts because a lot of guys will get cut that are on that FA list. The list will change a lot in the next 7 days.

Defense defense defense
1st - explosive playmaker
2nd - RB
3rd - TE/HB
4th - NT
5th - CB
6th - C
7th - G
Between defense players suspensions and Oline hold outs, we need to draft trench guys in the first three rounds this up coming draft.

I'm leaning more this direction every day. I'd like to see them get a dominate NT prospect as well, but historically that hasn't been a position they put a high value on.

1: Defensive End
*Ray Mac situation with aging Justin Smith = 2 soon to be available spots. Carradine with one spot, rookie with the other, Dial and Dorsey at NT and rotation.

2: Cornerback
*Free agents in Cook and Culliver, and Ward still focusing on the 3rd CB/Safety role, we need to add more talent to the position.

3: Quarterback
*Groom a solid backup to Kaepernick. Save 1.25+M in salary.

4: Running Back
*Gore, Hunter, and James may not be on the roster next year. Lattimore remains a question.

5: Safety
*Competes with Craig Dahl.

6: Wide Receiver
*Possible replacement for B-Lloyd.

7: Quarterback
*PS/Potential #3 QB.

Funny thing is before the Ray Mac situation, I still thought DE was the number one need heading into 2015. I figured that once Tank was a starter, we'd still need a guy waiting in the wings to come in and rotate. We can't count on Okoye yet, and the rest of the guys TJE, Dial, etc for the moment are rotational guys. His situation has only bumped it up to high priority now.

How do you feel now?

I think DE just moved up near the top, either 1st or 2nd round worthy.
