MadDog49er's FInal Draft Review and Niners' Draft Grade

Here are my thoughts so far on the draft:

Ward: C - Has played ok, but not great. This is not a Reid pick like last year that will go to the Pro Bowl. Drafting a CB might have been a better option, but Cox has made up for that in a big way.
Reid is playing the same position with as as with his college team whereas Ward is playing slot corner which is not only not his natural position, according to my knowledge, but also a difficult position even for more experienced CBs.
But I would give him the same grade, perhaps even a B-/C+ because he was improving from game to game imho.
Hyde A - Hunter and LMJ gone? Fantastic pick. Personally, I thought the pick was unnecessary at the time.
That is why you are not a GM just kidding
a run-heavy franchise with an aging #1-RB and a question mark behind him not picking at least another RB? won't happen. Though, I was surprised that we picked one in round 2 and not a little bit later.
I would give him a B because he still has to learn how to pass protect.
Martin C - We definitely need him, but so far he isn't playing that great imo. Center to QB exchange is problematic.
think the same
Borland A - Definitely needed him this year, and he has been playing at an elite level except for his tendency to gamble.
think the same.
Lynch A - This pick may still end up failing if he has locker room or off the field issues, however we needed a pash rush this year, and a 1 year wonder 5th round pick is worth it.
think almost the same. My grade is based on what happened so far. Don't care about future problems (with late-rounders in particular).
Dontae A - Productive late round player.
same here. Could have taken over for Cully, if the latter one would still suck and if Ward were still healthy. Cannot not say any bad think about him. during his limited playing time at CB, he was solid. Slot CB seems to be a strength since he has taken over.
He could arise to a huge steal of the last draft.

I wonder if Maddog has ever increased someones grade from an F- to an A+ before. Because.. Lynch is an A+ at this point.
Lynch played how many games so far? four? Why should he re-grade any pick after 4 games?
How did things go 5 years later? Borland was probably the best pick if not for retirement...

The Niners stunk this one up. And, I stunk it up with them, on the first three picks. Ward has been decent when not injured, Hyde has had a mediocre career. Martin bombed out. Gaines has been up and down...mostly down. Just not the impact I hoped across the board early on

1- Ward
2- Hyde
3- Martin
4- Gaines
5- Bryant
6- Jones
7- Murray
8- Jeffcoat
9- Tripp
10- Loston
11- Coleman
12- Hurst

Luckily, I saved some magic later on with Martavis Bryant, D'Quan Jones, and James Hurst. I probably selected Aaron Murray for his girlfriend

Fun to go back and analyze where I hit and missed.
