I'm confused. If all players have a chance to make an impact, then why are the draft picks we made precluded from this. Jimmy Ward..cant make an impact? Hyde? Martin? Borland?

Perhaps I should be more specific, I was referring to mainly CBs and WRs. I am not precluding Jimmie Ward although many question about Ward's selection and him being taken somewhat high. Plus, most also believe we would draft 2 legit CBs. As for WRs, obviously we have none cos up to the end of 3rd we are yet to draft one.

Many mock drafts had ward predicted to go in the 1st rd. We picked em at 30...so that would be along the lines of many predictions. Curious which cbs which taken before our pick did ya want??? And for wr stevie has 3 more yrs! Lil taller then crabs and despite what some has claimed catchs very well! So wr covered 3 yrs. We may be able to work deal for crabs, incentive based wit nice guarunteed...this parts wishful thinking for me tho. Possible tho
Overall it's an ok draft. I too wish we would have used the picks as ammunition and went up and made a splash for a player or two that can be game changers. We went for depth. I think Borland is ok, but kind of a waste of a pick. We could have addressed ILB/st later with a guy like Lamin Barrow.

And does it bother anyone else that we started the draft off with two 2nds and three 3rds but ended up with only one 2nd and three 3rds even though all we've done is traded back? I know we picked up a 4th, 5th, and 6th, but still! It's kind of weak that we only ended up with one selection in the second round. Not a fan of stockpiling picks in rounds 4 and 5. We should have move up in rounds 2 and 3. We essentially lost a second round pick so we could have some more picks in rounds 4-6. That's garbage.

Over and over and over the point of draft is to build for the future... FOR GOOD TEAMS. When we were picking in the top 10 - you're right - we *needed* impact players to start day one. This time around we are literally drafting for the future (and plugging a need a CB w/ first round and not even messing with trying to draft a WR).

I think that Jimmie Ward will be on the field quite a bit. Otherwise, we'll see Stevie Johnson a ton... hopefully Martin pushes for C this year. Carlos Hyde will probably be our short yardage back to start with. Only time will tell.

That's what good teams do, though. Finally we are a perennial good team again!

Them days where pretty easy to predict 1st 3 rds lmao....baalke its much harder to predict....some aint very happy rite now!! Imo he has shown to be a mad scientist! Lmao we virtually gotten stevie johnson for free sooooo awesome

I actually didn't think we needed to trade up in the 1st cos I thought we could cream it in the 2nd at the very least. But, for the 1st, personally I would have taken Roby who went to the Broncos right after our pick. I know we can debate about Roby's DUI, but we can also debate about Carlos Hyde's suspension too. As for the 2nd, I would have taken Jean-Baptiste.

The omniscient among us are again blessing us with the breadth, depth, and poignancy of their knowledge.

Unlike mere mortals, these sages grasp the essence of the preordained inadequacies of players conscripted and yet to be conscripted in this draft.

Dare we, the unwashed and the common, challenge the proclamations of these self-ordained high priests.

Only the blasphemers among us would not acknowledge their superiority and suggest that it might be both proper and reasonable to withhold judgment--to at least allow the chosen to prove their value on the field of play.

The only thing that will put us over the hump is the progression of Kap as a QB. If he doesn't turn the corner with his QB abilities then the draft and all our new FA toys are moot.

Kaeps gonna be ok. Lol he obviously didnt tell me this ha ha! First 8 games and run to sb47...we had crabs, moss, ginn, manningham, kyle, vernon delanie! Moss now was in no offense but moss in name. Mario was reliable, crabs exploded!! Vernon well was vernon! With this core of wr's along with mixed pistol as well kaep flourished!!! See kaeps first start. Thing of beauty n amazement lol chicago lol no offense

Last yr we had boldin, davis.....they accounted for 20 of 21 passes. Crabs caught the 1 other pass! Baldwin, kyle, manningham where incapable and or injured! Along with crabs over half season. Vance a rook didnt get much a chance, miller our fb was our 3rd leading reciever!!

Fast forward to now. Kaep has healthy crabs, boldin's never aging self (badass) stevie johnson, q patton, brandon loyd (if makes team) big vernon davis (superbadass) 2nd offseason like patton! Kaep will be just fine this yr....

Look out nfl
Gotta love it

Awe i see, lol read thru the back n forth. I get it ya had guys ya had more hopes for i can respect this. But in the end we kinda did cover both needs wr & cb... Tho just wasnt the highly touted guy. Tho was known, just not as well!! The message reading thru posts where lil to back n forth. I gotcha man. Well i hope ward is a hit!!! Last yr friend told me bout em....checked em out then. Whats awesome is he is very consistent, and very productive. Not much a lapse mentally! Very very very consistent..hope he wins ya over!! Lol hope he makes it!!

I think with this roster, you're kind of limited to adding game changers as your roster is filled with game-changers. I was a HUGE proponent of adding a nickel corner, particularly Verrett and the 49ers did just that with Ward, a guy with arguably higher upside due to his versatility. Beyond that, no rookie CB, no rookie WR was going to join this roster and start. This was always about adding more depth to this team overall and they have done a splendid job of that.

As much as people bash the Borland pick, what nobody seems to be considering is what would happen if Willis missed a few games, got injured while Bowman is out. Are you comfortable with Wilhoite and Moody starting at ILB? I'm not. Borland provides a guy who is ready to start, ready to contribute, a highly instinctual football player who I expect to see starting alongside Willis next season. He'll be a major special teams contributor as well so I really can't complain about the pick. The heart of the 49ers defense is their front seven and added depth after the Bowman injury was crucial, the 49ers added that depth, not the guy I would have picked but Borland was universally ranked as the #2 ILB in the draft, not sure how you can be upset about that really.
No rookies to start over at worst the second best team in the NFL? Fire Baalke now!

Can we also debate about Roby getting lit up over and over again last season? He didn't look like a 1st round CB, or even a 2nd round CB. Nickel corner was a huge need, 49ers went out and took care of it.

This. I loved the thought of a guy like Dennard or Fuller, but reality suggests that neither of those guys would be starters on the 49ers. The only starter spot up for grabs was the nickel corner and the 49ers took care of that need right away with Ward. I love Verrett but Ward possesses a lot of the same qualities with better size, more physical and a lot more versatile. I can't complain, not the guy I initially wanted but the guy the 49ers needed. Good pick. Beyond that, there's really no starter jobs up for grabs, all they are trying to do is set it up so if a guy goes down with injury, you've got a hungry young backup ready to go. The guys that other teams are drafting as starters, the 49ers are drafting as 2nd and 3rd string players and if you're a 49ers fan, that should make you absolutely ecstatic. A team with terrific depth just got a heck of a lot deeper.

Good points, Pheonix...Might I add that Borland could potentially be the missing piece we lost when we let Blake Costanzo go in 2012..

Meh, you don't draft that kind of player in the 3rd round of a deep draft

Sure, we can debate about it. But, just to be clear, wasn't he graded as a 1st round or at worst top 2nd CB by most analysts ?
