Does Jimmy Ward remind the 49ers of Earl Thomas

193 lbs isn't puny...I'm sure the Niner fitness coaches will help him get up to 200. What he is, first & foremost is a heckuva football player who has a ton of versatility, and is a ballhawk who can cover and hit. So, what's the problem? Baalke didn't draft the guy you wanted? Get over it. It was widely agreed among fans and media the secondary was the biggest priority. Baalke just added the #3 S on Walter Football's draft prospect list. At #30 that's a darn good pick. Read up on him...look at his tape...pretty sure you'll find out we just added a darn good player to our secondary.

It seems like your doing more of a job defending the pick than actually praising the pick. I really dont like the pick but time will tell but by you mentioning those players tells me more than the pick itself. Baalke has a bad track record with picks this late and you did a great job of naming those 2 picks on cue

Baalke was responsible for only AJ, not Balmer. So how can you say he has a track record with late first round picks with only late pick in the first (AJ), thats not a track record of any means.

If anything he has a record of signing players that work out into good starters when it comes to DBs- Culliver, Brock, and Brown as late p/u goes, and Reid.

That statement is kind of contradicting. A saftey that can cover and stuff the run is not the same as a slot corner. Its not even the same. They either got one or the other but I think he will only be a slot corner and I dont see him as a safety in the future

Says who? Its already been reported that he'll be playing slot corner and will be groomed as a safety to take over for Bethea eventually.

In Super Bowl XLVIII, Seattle's Kam Chancellor re-established the value of the safety who could play in lurk (midfield) coverage against slot receivers and tight ends, adding an important element to a team's overall defensive concepts. Ward has already done a lot of lurking, and he'll be a great asset when the 49ers move to their nickel and dime coverages, because he covers so much ground, and in so many different ways.

Compare that to dumbass Walter who gave them a C because Ward went later that in HIS mock.
Disappointed . In a year where the talent was deep enough to move up and get an impact player in the teens we did nothing . In a year when half of our draft picks cant have roster spots .. we did nothing . It was the wrong draft to sit . I watched the jimmy ward highlite reels . My opionion is he will be a fair player at best and will be a weakness agianst size in the redzone . Imagine the huge tight ends lining up agianst this guy lol . There were 3 other players available that id have taken and could have been ok with . Not a fan of this pick at all .. grade D .

Absolutely agree. Seattle has four guys in the back that can defend against the pass. This puts the 49ers in that same class in another year, or maybe less.

It is going to be interesting to see how the rest of the draft unfolds. Obviously Baalke realizes the need for better pass defender in the back to defend against this more pass-oriented league. That having been said, I wonder if Harbaugh will now become more pass-oriented as well, or is this just Baalke giving Fangio guys for his defense.

Great post... The ability every Seattle DB has in RANGE is what we were lacking... What do y'all think... If it's a crucial passing down, who is our better deep cover guy... Ward or Reid... That's a question I can't wait to find the answer too...
He reminds me of Mark Roman but softer. He'll be flipping burgers at McDonald's in 3 years

kam chancellor 6' 3" 232
Jimmie Ward 5' 11" 191. Im not trying to argue but so far I have seen all these comparisons to seattle safeties and it not even close. Just because he played safety at NIU doesnt make him a safety in the NFL and if hes an A+ draft pick teams would have been jumping all over him. I hope he works out but im not a huge fan of the pick

Ward is a small consolation prize after missing out on fuller, Gilbert, verrett, Beckham, and cooks.

Incidentally, its being reported that Ward was the 3rd defensive back on the 49ers draft board behind Gilbert and Fuller.

Yes because other teams never let talented guys slide down the draft boards. That's why Russell Wilson and Tom Brady were 1st round picks.

Baalke has been with the 49ers since 2005 and he ws a scout. I dont think you make it to GM eithout a lot of clout in the organization

Based on what? In 2 of CBS's mock drafts they had him going in the Top 20. In a third, right at #30. If people want to undervalue a player that's fine but his range was and has been late 1st/early 2nd for quite awhile now.

So now do we move up twice tomorrow??? I feel it coming
In NFCW that includes Tavon and Percy, I think this is a great pick.. He can cover both.
