As one scout told me down in Mobile during the Senior Bowl, it is going to take an NFL team one year to find out what type of player Newton is and one year to find out what type of character he has. There is some risk involved.

What took place on Thursday was a free look. That’s it. This wasn’t a test by NFL standards. Instead, an opportunity for the media to check out one of the hottest names in the draft. A player that has been in the news for a lot of the wrong reasons since he left the University of Florida and headed over to Auburn.

The NFL will get their time with Newton. Accuracy, pro route schemes, etc. The same things the league will want to see from Blaine Gabbert of Mizzou and Ryan Mallett of Arkansas. Watch them work out in shorts and grade them based off of the results, interviews and game film.

But let’s cool the hype for now. This is a long process. Newton might end up being a top ten or even a top five pick. There are quarterback hungry teams at the top of the draft that can’t win on Sundays with their current depth charts at the position. Or we could see a steady decline from the Combine until late April when the names are finally announced at the draft.

We are all going to have opinions and I’m saving mine until the NFL gets a real look at Cam Newton—when it counts.

Would not touch CN with a 10 foot pole... can't see him adjusting to the speed of the NFL and having to make multiple decisions in tenths of a second... Could be a an awesome TE project, perhaps.

I dont want to piss anyone off but that video is kind of f**king stupid. I mean he's not really doing anything, he's doing some footwork drills and play fakes to show off to the media. Every NFL prospect should be able to do that stuff. What would be impressive is if he learned the basics of an NFL offense and broke down how you would beat a defense with those plays or whatever, basically what I'm trying to say is if he looked at NFL film with people and broke it down. Because at the end of the day, the speed or arm of your QB doesn't matter a whole lot. What matters, especially for a team like ours and the WCO, is if the ball is coming out on time and going to the correct read. Then accuracy also. The rest of this s**t is nice, the physical stuff, because that's easiest to judge. But it doesn't make a good QB. Otherwise Joe Montana would be a worse QB than Jamarcus Russel.

I have read some stupid s**t in this forum (Cam over Luck for one) this is by far the most sane observation I have read.
Cam at worst will be a more accurate VY with better decision making off the field. At best he will be a Rothlesburger type, not beautiful mechanics but a football player. I don't really care as he will not be a 49er.

Thanks man, and I'm not really for Cam or against him. I don't really want a QB at #7 but if we take him or Gabbert I'd live with it. It's just I didn't see anything in that video where it's like "wow this dude is shooting lightning bolts out of his ass" or anything. It's all routine stuff. I expect Mallett and Gabbert to be able to do the same thing, and then even the 2nd/3rd round guys like Ponder or Kaepernick. The throws were all basically scripted, and he knew where he was going with the ball, and he didnt have to worry about getting laid out by an NFL defensive lineman or anything. We'll see how the guy does when he has to worry about getting the ball from under center, making different audibles to a play, reading an NFL coverage, and then making an accurate throw and getting the ball out on time.
No one knows what kind of QB Newton will be, but at this point, I would be stoked if we picked him.

Yes there is a high bust potential, but there is also an "infinite" ceiling with him. And yes, those throws were very scripted, but even throwing to your buddies, its hard to consistently hit 50+ yard throws with 15-20mph wind.

And the initiative to make this event before the draft signifies that he understands what's at stake and he is doing everything in his power to becoming a successful NFL QB.

He has presence, physique, athletic ability, desire, accuracy, and the desire to improve.

I just don't want to have a shot of drafting him and pass and watch him become then next great QB.
i was totally down for Newton until i saw dilfer kiss his ass. whatever dilfer says after he called hostler a superstar OC should just be ignored

Media hype, Obvious you do not have the facts let me get them for you!! He's the heisman trophy winner and his team won the national championship this year and he won the championship last year with a junior college team! Remember what Bill Walsh said that if a player is good on two different levels of competition then more than likely he'll be good in the pros!! He's a winner and that's just what the 49ers need!!

I have though Buffalo is a real possibility for a while now. I am starting to think Carolina may be as well, but as of right now there is still a chance he drops to 7.

Lol

#1 to Carolina?

Yup. It's a definite possibility still. Can't see how it isn't.

Whatever those odds are, they are huge....

smith won the fiesta bowl i believe and he and reggie bush owned in high school. bowler was a good college qb, so was ryan leaf, so was jamarcus. it happens. i like Cam and i wouldnt mind drafting him at all but theres gonna be a lot of work involved with making him an NFL qb.

Only the bold is true. Reggie Bush did for Alex Smith what he did for Matt Leihart.
I watched the workout on ESPN and Trent's man love for him...meh...It was without pads, w/o DB's, without any real pressure (you know the guy wasn't going to hit and so did Cam), and no off linemen to throw over or between which all can altar your throwing motion and accuracy.

...oh and comparisons between Russell and Cam Newton are hilarious. Russell was lazy and out of shape - he was like that in college and it was obvious that once he gets paid 60M dollars, he was going to turn into a cow.

Cam Newton is a chiseled beast. The guy works hard. That alone should dismiss any comparisons. Russell was a super-talented QB, and if he worked hard - there is no question in my mind he would still be the starting QB of the Raiders.

dude go look up quotes on wes miles and their coaching staff that's not what they said abouit russell. he wasn't lazy or out of shape. dude he worked hard at LSU & miles stuck his neck out on that.
once he got to the raiders they pooped on him, and i don't think he was 1) mature enough/wasn't ready for the nfl 2)got depressed 3) they had some bad coaching as well.
infact a couple of months ago on espn there was that special on russell & what happened. during that special they interviewed 3 LSU coaches including Miles & they all said that's notthe russell who was at LSU. Obviosuly something happened when he went to the raiders.
not trying to stick up for russell, but what if he stayed in college.
i bet cam newton once he gets piad the big buckos will stroll down memory lan and hit some of his bad habbits to & turn into a chisled ox lol. watch out he might smoke some weed & steal your laptop

Les Miles will be an idiot not to say those things. He won't be able to recruit a decent player if he didn't say those things. All you have to do is, watch the game. He was already a chubby guy in college.

If he was such a hard working guy at LSU - why were there were questions about his work ethic before the draft?

Cam Newton may be a bust as well at the next level, but it won't be for lack of tryin' to be the best he can be. I'm not worried about Cam gettin' depressed - the kind of controversial season he has went through is enough to show how mentally strong he is.

...oh and he is already a chiseled Ox. That's a good thing.

Just finally watched the video. I've lost all respect for Dilfer. How are scouts suppose to be drooling over this workout? Was decent at best. I mean nothing jumps out at u. I guess dilfer wants to be like kiper. Not impressive. I was expecting something amazing to happen lol because of how dilfer blew this up

So Dilfer was there IN PERSON, meanwhile you saw less than a quarter of the actual workout on Youtube and you lose all respect for Dilfer ?

OK then, moving right along to our next item on the agenda this morning.....

Yea, this was a 9 minute clip out of a 40 minute workout and into a pretty stiff wind. It was mostly to show the footwork and taking snaps from the center.

My evidence that he will be a bust is every press conference/interview I've ever seen him.

You think cause he's black he isn't smart enough to play qb... Vick had a wonderlic of 14... I'm not saying we draft the kid, but i don't think he's as dumb as russel or vick! Cause i want prince or peterson!

We drafted Alex Smith...real smart kid. That turned out great, didn't it. All what matters is, when it comes to mental aspect of it - if you are football intelligent or not, how quickly you can react on the field, you are willing to learn and how fast you can learn - which is what the workout today was about. It was to show that just a month after national title game, Cam Newton has quickly adapted taking snaps from the center, doing 3 steps, 5 steps, and 7 steps drop without any issues. He didn't do any of those things in college.

This is all what this workout was about - that he can learn and he can learn real fast, and he is willing to work for it. Learning footwork is not just physical, a lot of it is mental.

Intelligence is necessary, not sufficient, to be a good NFL QB. It took Vick a LONG time to become a good passer, and even then it was after he got 3 gamebreaking receivers.

And how does a workout where everything was planned ahead of time show that he can read a defense?
Cam Newton is a raw project. But I support a raw project, especially at the QB position with Harbaugh here.

But I don't like using a 7th pick for Cam , unless a very good veteran prospect is brought in. But then you have to think about getting a very good defensive player at that spot in this very deep defense draft.

Not only is Cam a off the field question mark, intelligence question mark, development worthy question mark, but he held out for $180,000 1 year contract in college

Can you imaging what money he will ask !!! Then a hold out!!! And he will get paid out the wazoo and is still a bust potential.

Another possible Crabtree situation in the making.

He was in college. Most college QBs don't know how to read defenses very well. What NFL teams look for - does he has a capacity to learn that and do it quickly. Cam Newton has been a starting QB for a year, and the improvement in year 1 is phenomenal...which shows his capacity to learn and implement it immediately.
