49ers eyeing Spiller or Best?
12:02PM ET
San Francisco 49ers

While San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary recently dropped a hint that the team is certain to address the need for a return man this offseason, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee does him one better. Rather than just get a dedicated return man, why not pick up a player that can be a dynamic addition to the offense as well, along the lines of Percy Harvin, Reggie Bush and Josh Cribbs?

While we had speculated in the past that Cribbs could possibly be traded this offseason (and furthermore, could be headed to San Fran), there appears to be some progress in his long-term negotiations with the Browns. So that path could be closed, but the drafting route is still open, and there are some options for the Niners if they choose to take them.

If the team elects to grab C.J. Spiller, they'll likely have to use one of their first-rounders to do so, as his stock is on the rise. On the other hand, they might be able to wait around for Jahvid Best, Joe McKnight or Dexter McCluster.

as much as I've always said we'd never pick up a RB in the first, this is giving me wood.

I have to admit, the thought of getting Spiller along with a RT gives me goose bumps. I think he would be an incredible pick.

I don't know guys. Don't under estimate the value of a explosive play-maker at four positions for our team...KR, PR, RB, and WR. A C Johnson-type who by the time the combine is over will be viewed as high if not higher than Beenie last year which I think was around the top 15.

My point is that after seeing what Bush and Harvin can do in the playoffs and Cribbs, Hester, Knox, etc. during the season, a Spiller would be a welcome addition to our arsenal especially in the hands of Rathman and Shotty. He can develop into a solid RB in the NFL while learning from one of the most hardest workers in the NFL, Gore.

Not only that, but you can see how natural he is in space, just a natural. Juke you once, juke you twice, guess what? TD!!! This is Spiller. He has "IT" like Maclin, like Harvin, like Cribbs and he takes care of so many needs in one!

Not matter what, I believe when it is all said and done, Scotty, Mike, Jimmy, Kurt and Tom will all come to same agreement...damn! We have to have this kid!

The best thing is I believe we can still get our franchise RT or LOG with the second pick in Williams, Bulaga or Iupati.

Everytime I review his clips, he stands out! Even my wife, who is just now understanding why I love this aspect of the NFL process, went wow! She just said when was the last time we had a RS who made an impact...Dexter Carter, John Taylor? Dang, it is time we get someone who can just scare teams to not kick to him, she said.

Some times the obvious does slap you in the face.

PS She wanted me to ask this question, "Didn't Gore get injured in the last few season, taking him out of games sometimes more than one? To which I said "Yes". So folks, do we want Coffee and Robinson to be our primary weapons after Gore goes down which is inevitable in this league?

Depth wins championships! We have to have that talented depth. Spiller to go with Gore and Coffee. Williams/Bulaga/Iupati in place of Snyder/Pashos. Or Iupati in place of Baas.

So yea, Spiller is definitely a viable option.

This is getting rather insane. A few folks on the webzone get a shiver up their leg at the idea of drafting a fast running back who struggles between the tackles. The fervor then spreads throughout the zone. Matt Barrows (familliar with the zone) picks up on the fervor and prints it. ESPN sees what Barrows has printed and suggests the 49ers are interested in a running back (despite the presence of Gore and Coffee), who can't run between the tackles very well.

PS - Does Jimmy Raye have a sweep, or toss play in his playbook?
I'm a believer in evaluating the historical contribution of the alumni of a given school. Clemson has NOT been a fertile ground for Niner draft picks on the offensive side of the ball:

WR Derrick Hamilton - last big "all-purpose yardage" guy from Clemson. This 4th-rouner never got on the field in a regular season game for the Niners. Preferred hoops. Did anyone else see Spiller at half-time of the Clemson BB game this past weekend, decked-out in his Clemson BB jersey, taking a half-court shot on behalf of a charity? Gave me a chilly Hamilton flashback.

RB Terence Flagler - a #1 pick, who also had "return skills". Eminantly forgettable in a Niner uniform.

WR Dwight Clark - low round pick, got a winner here.

Defensively, Clemson has been more helpful to the Niners:
DL Archie Reese - solid contributor
DL Jim Stuckey - solid contributor
LB John Johnson - who?
he will be fun to use in madden. have him and gore in shotgun formation this offense can be scary.

Except he CAN run between the tackles, has better vision and speed and can break tackles unlike Bush.
Ill take him...the guy is a playmaker....but that would mean getting rid of Robinson...which I dont mind either. He is can be easily replaced!

Yeah it looks like he can run very well between the tackles, provided he has a hole to hit. Spiller and Bulaga in the first would be really great.
His highlight video is interesting. He is fast, accelerates well, and seems to break away from tackles. There is just one thing: I saw a couple of defenders close in on him as he sprinted downfield. I say, find out who those fast suckers are and draft THEM!

im pretty sure those games were from when he was playing with his foot injury....Not positive about that...but im pretty sure it was....when he is 100% nobody can catch him....except maybe Jahvid Best
