I'm all for trading picks in the first and second round if they are looking at a deep playoff run and Superbowl. They hardly ever work out and it looks like the 49ers do better with later picks. Unless we are one of the worst teams in football and looking at a high pick those I would save until draft day to trade.

I'm tired of being scared to trade high picks.
The Rams did it a million times, won a damn Super Bowl and then sucked for all of one year as the defending champs before being competitive again. We traded three 1sts for Trey Lance and even though he busted we were just fine.
It's not like if you trade 1sts and don't win a Super Bowl, you become the Jets. It's such a weird concern fans have but it literally never works that way. Teams always recover just fine. Matter of fact, the Jets have never made a trade like this outside of Rodgers (even then it was not that much). In fact, they have been on the GIVING end of these big trades (Jamaal Adams, Sauce, Quinnen Williams) and lo and behold THEY ARE STILL THE JETS WHILE THE SEAHAWKS WON A SUPER BOWL DESPITE ADAMS COMPLETELY BUSTING!!
I get being hesitant to make a massive splash for Jeffrey Simmons or TJ Watt or Maxx Crosby (probably not possible anymore) or whoever, but honestly? If you make a trade like that and then don't win the Super Bowl it is not the end of the world. Nobody is going to see the trade as the reason you didn't win, and history says your franchise is not going to self-destruct. Everyone sees the trades you DON'T make as the reason you didn't win though.

The key is - a 1st or 2nd can't be a 1 year rental -- 3rd is an expensive rental because that is typically also a multi-year player -- 4th - 6th can be a rental. So if you are going 1st or 2nd - then you also need contract in place or essentially worked out ahead of the trade.
Khalil Mack is an ideal fit - on a reasonable contract, still an impact player, could possibly play in 2027 if you love his production this year, and probably costs a 3rd - 5th or some combo of picks.
Crosby is a good fit for a 1st - but from what he is showing - it could be a 1st and MORE -- because he still has more years on his current contract. However, he would be good insurance if 9ers have to give up on Bosa being a reliable contributor going forward. Would reduce Bosa's negotiating power a bit.
BTW - I hate the baloney that we "gave up 3 firsts" for Lance. We gave up that year's first for the other teams first (that's a swap), plus 2 additional firsts. So we really only gave up 2 future 1st rounders -- and given the 9ers typical draft position, the other team had to assume they would be lower end 1sts.

You really should be careful what you wish for. Remember Carlos Beltran? HOF player the Giants rented for 6 weeks. Showed up injured and it cost them Zack Wheeler who went on to a very stable career minus a TommyJohn injury. Now what does baseball have to do with football? Think O.J. in '78. Joe Thomas traded 5 picks for him. including a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. What did he accomplish for us? He tried to build from scratch with a has-been and Bill Walsh had to clean up the mess.
I can see trading a 3rd for Chase Young or Emmanuel Sanders in the heat of a Super Bowl run. Bill Walsh traded a 2nd for Fred Dean when the 49ers record was 3-2 and the team was moving upward fast. An off season 3rd for Osa. A 2nd and 4th for Steve Young. Just remember financial reasons played a role in the cases of Dean and Osa. In Young's case it was the arrival of Testaverde and an altruistic owner who felt Young needed a break from a losing situation. Belichick may have done the same thing with Goroppolo giving him a chance to start in a good situation in the 'other' conference. Is it fishing in troubled waters? Let's just say in some cases the players interests come into account. Keion White got sidetracked in his 3rd year-numbers game. We got him in an ideal time where he has something to prove. We need to keep our antenna up for more of those.
I would not trade a 3rd(or higher) for any player this year. Next year's draft is too good and our big name stars are getting older.. Let the next 4+ weeks play out. Bad teams will again take into consideration the interests of certain veteran players whose preferences need to be taken into account over who they're gonna butt heads with on the field. The existence of the 'other conference' will be influential as these GM's/coaches don't want to trade a player to a team that can come back and bite them. No need for desperation moves a la Beltran. An over-30 veteran will have less motivation to play head games over money. If the Chargers can get a 3rd for Mack they should take advantage of it. 49ers-no higher than a 4th.

I'd love TJ Watt but he's 32 and would probably warrant high draft capital, he also has been an outside linebacker his whole career. He just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, Raiders would have to lose out to the deadline if they were to consider trading Crosby and even then they do not trade with the 49ers.
Mack makes so much sense plays multiple positions and should be had fairly cheap 4-5th but I just don't see us trading for a 35 year old

Steelers are not trading Watt and i think Crosby is of the table now for the raiders they are officially in playoff contention.
I dont see us trading for an older player as a problem I think Mack is pretty likely Bosa Williams MAck and Height can be pretty deadly off the eddge and is a great rotation to keep everyone fresh. That being said we have to wait till trade deadline players can get hurt either way (mack can get hurt or another position on 49ers where we may have to make a trade like DB or WR)

Why would Steelers trade Watt? Yall need to put the pipe down. Mack can likely be had for cheap since it's a one year deal and he's playing well on a s**t team.

And teams try and do right by older vets who have never won a single playoff game.

agreed 100% with this
most of the teams that made bold trades during the season won it, even if they were not the biggest names. shaheed, hardman, von miller, toney, ajayi, gronk, dillon or percy harvin.

At this point, doesn't matter. They have to win now

They gotta go all in, their core guys are old, lynch needs to be all in, this might be the final shot for guys like Trent Christian and kittle

Kittle and CMC will probably play another 3-4 years. We need to get Trent one

Absolutely time to go all in. Snag a pass rusher and a WR.

Agreed. Khalil Mack or Will MacDonald IV & Brian Thomas Jr 🤔

At this point Brian Thomas Jr feels more likely than Vikings trading JJ to us, plus more upside. Would probably take a 3rd and another pick at least, maybe a second rounder instead of the 3rd.
