They just didn't want to pay him a base salary of over 4 million dollars this year. Cutting him and bringing him back on a 2-year deal with seven guaranteed plus incentives for pro bowl and such which comes out at the back end. They still got the guy they like at a cheaper base salary for the next 2 years.
I'm not in total disagreement of what the Niners are doing this year ripping the Band-Aid off and getting rid of all the dead money this year. If they can hit a decent draft this year they will have plenty of cap room next year even after Purdy's extension to go after free agents that they would like on top of continuing to build throughout the draft. Very similar to what the Bills did last year. And they still managed to play out of their mind good a lot of it due to their quarterback play.
In a way they're sacrificing this season to be able to be free of a lot of dead money going into future years. Honestly it's the best year to do it finishing last and having an easier schedule this season. That's also why the players they brought in from free agency this year are on one year deals, most of them anyway. They're off the books next year and if they like to keep them they'll have the money to do so or go after better players.

It's pretty obvious we're trying to copy what the Rams/Bills did. Rams sucked garbage for a year but are a playoff team again, Bills went to the AFC Championship anyway. Our FO is clearly thinking "schedule is soft this year—perfect time to reset the books and still possibly compete."

It's why I don't agree with the "we're rebuilding" logic. I would still consider this upcoming season a failure if we don't return to the playoffs.

I think the FO is comfortable with Bartch and co. at LG It may be a small upgrade over banks, but I would hope we would get one of those two players as well

I think we will likely explore these options after the draft to see if A) we address it with a rookie and B) when it doesn't count against 2026 comp picks.

True, but they will most likely be signed by then

If our defensive line isn't going to get that much pressure this year, then at least sign one more good corner like Asante Samuel Junior. However, I believe the corner we signed from Seattle is that move, at least to our front office, not us as fans. Having a dominant secondary will help the pass rush.

It all depends on how healthy he is, didn't he tear his achillies last year? Or ACL?

He tore his ACL this year. He only played four games I believe.
Calais Campbell and Brunskill

both cheap and both would be improvements on both lines
+ vet leadership

Huh? Asante Samuel? He had a shoulder injury

Something strange about this
I don't get the fascination with Samuel, he can't tackle - bad fit

We need guys who can cover. I'm willing to sacrifice a bit on tackling if we can get a good coverage guy out there. Guys like Lenoir are hard to find.

Yiadom was a good and willing tackler. Awful in coverage. I'd take the reverse for a cb all day

For sure, French! Now that our pass rush is weak, we're going to have to strengthen it by improving our coverage but I doubt we spend that much on Asante Samuel Junior

Yeah, I'd roll the dice if the price was right but something is weird about his situation so I'm kind of against it at any price.

You could be caught in a situation like last year where we think we can depend on someone and then he's not around

secondary is the least of our problems on DEF

and its the only area our FO addressed in FA
Azeez Ojulari signing a 1 year deal with the Eagles for $4 million.
