Kyle Shanahan has Cassius Marsh's back in the edge rusher discussion0 New, 191 comments
The 49ers didn't do much in terms of drafting pass rushers, Kyle Shanahan explained why, much to the surprise of his current recently signed pass rusher.
This is from an article in SB NATION By Patrick O'Holloway April 29,2018.. It was in response to Why the coaching staff DID NOT DRAFT A EDGE/PR PLAYER IN THE DRAFT. I will include a few more quotes from other articles as well, see as follows:
1. "You've got to be pretty good to beat out [DL Cassius] Marsh. You've got to be pretty good to beat out [DL Arik] Armstead. You don't just get guys. If you get them, someone else has got to get cut and we've got a pretty good group". SB Nation, 2018
2. "You just don't walk in, and take a guy like Cassius Marshs' job"- Joe Fann Instagram April 28,2018.
2B. (Marsh's Response on twitter)-This right here gave me chills and almost brought tears to my eyes. To go from never feeling appreciated and having to prove myself every single day. To knowing my Coaching staff and GM have my back and trust my work ethic and talent is an indescribable feeling. I am so grateful but never satisfied! I will never lose this chip on my shoulder and will continue to grind every single day. Because in the league, any day could be your last! #goniners #lovethegrind
3. The 49ers actions in the draft indicate they are satisfied enough with the development of their current roster that they didn't see a need to grab a dedicated pass rusher, and Marsh may be one of the reasons why. Time will tell if he's the reason they passed on a dedicated pass rusher, but it sounds like they are happy with who they have.-Joe Fann Column.4/29/2018.
4.Bringing Marsh back doesn't change their need for a premium passing rushing defensive end, but it does give them an option they like at the back end of the depth chart. Marsh can play special teams, which Lynch couldn't.For the season, Marsh was given a solid 76.9 grade from Pro Football Focus, including his nine games with the Patriots, and was ranked PFF's 10th best edge pass rusher on the free agent market.
Elvis Dumervil led the 49ers with 6.5 sacks. Marsh's two in six games paces out to more than five over a full season, more than DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas, who each had three. Marsh was effectively the team's second-best pass rusher late in the year.
Bringing back Marsh was a sound decision with little downside. He's young, athletic and willing to play special teams, making him an ideal player for the back end of the roster. But he won't prevent the team from making a sizable investment at defensive end in free agency or the NFL draft. Niners Wire 02/2018.
****** I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT I HOPE AND THINK YOU GET MY POINT
It states that he CAN play ST, can round off the end of the roster and is an affordable player- ALL OF WHICH FACTORED IN THEM EXTENDING HIM, IE- GIVING HIM LOVE. The above quotes and the accompanying bibliography I hope suffice in answering your assertion..
Thank you,,
