I think they should look for someone with the versatility to play all three LB spots. The SAM plays 15% of total snaps. 15%!! It's almost a waste of a roster spot to have a designated SAM.

Just keeping Marsh as a backup, as he has some ST and PR ability, albeit not at a starters level. I agree Smith and Nzcheoza , played there mostly, but Marsh seems o have endeared himself to our staff, so he has to be a backup somewhere. Besides, who wud do his karate kicks???..lol

So our sam must be able to rush in nickel packages and play LB. Sounds like Barrett to me. ;)

Perfect fit,,as is Kwon Alexander at WLB on other side..
Will he be a RFA or UFA??

I'd get this guy in FA to man our SAM position with Nchoeza or Marsh as backups. Id then DRAFT a guy like Clelin Ferrel, Bosa, or DT like Williams. we would have a few Rush type guys instead of 1 and some "maybes"..

Barrett would be ideal. I thought Marsh did awful in coverage though? I stated elsewhere I'm okay with loading up on other positions in free agency and using the draft to acquire pass rushers. Signing Barrett would go a long way towards giving us that flexibility.

Very very true. I only include Marsh b'cuzz the coaches seem to LOVE him. And I cant think of any other position to backup for him, (esp. when we draft an Edge guy, and keep the guys we got in place like Armstead and Thomas). If theyre willing to let marsh walk, then by all means, Nchoeza wud backup Barrett.

I know he isn't a SAM, but once we draft an Edge guy and get a FA, where do we put a guy our coaching staff LOVES ??

What are you talking about? Where has anybody said they love him and is irreplaceable because of it?
Kyle Shanahan has Cassius Marsh's back in the edge rusher discussion0 New, 191 comments

The 49ers didn't do much in terms of drafting pass rushers, Kyle Shanahan explained why, much to the surprise of his current recently signed pass rusher.

This is from an article in SB NATION By Patrick O'Holloway April 29,2018.. It was in response to Why the coaching staff DID NOT DRAFT A EDGE/PR PLAYER IN THE DRAFT. I will include a few more quotes from other articles as well, see as follows:
1. "You've got to be pretty good to beat out [DL Cassius] Marsh. You've got to be pretty good to beat out [DL Arik] Armstead. You don't just get guys. If you get them, someone else has got to get cut and we've got a pretty good group". SB Nation, 2018
2. "You just don't walk in, and take a guy like Cassius Marshs' job"- Joe Fann Instagram April 28,2018.
2B. (Marsh's Response on twitter)-This right here gave me chills and almost brought tears to my eyes. To go from never feeling appreciated and having to prove myself every single day. To knowing my Coaching staff and GM have my back and trust my work ethic and talent is an indescribable feeling. I am so grateful but never satisfied! I will never lose this chip on my shoulder and will continue to grind every single day. Because in the league, any day could be your last! #goniners #lovethegrind
3. The 49ers actions in the draft indicate they are satisfied enough with the development of their current roster that they didn't see a need to grab a dedicated pass rusher, and Marsh may be one of the reasons why. Time will tell if he's the reason they passed on a dedicated pass rusher, but it sounds like they are happy with who they have.-Joe Fann Column.4/29/2018.
4.Bringing Marsh back doesn't change their need for a premium passing rushing defensive end, but it does give them an option they like at the back end of the depth chart. Marsh can play special teams, which Lynch couldn't.For the season, Marsh was given a solid 76.9 grade from Pro Football Focus, including his nine games with the Patriots, and was ranked PFF's 10th best edge pass rusher on the free agent market.
Elvis Dumervil led the 49ers with 6.5 sacks. Marsh's two in six games paces out to more than five over a full season, more than DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas, who each had three. Marsh was effectively the team's second-best pass rusher late in the year.
Bringing back Marsh was a sound decision with little downside. He's young, athletic and willing to play special teams, making him an ideal player for the back end of the roster. But he won't prevent the team from making a sizable investment at defensive end in free agency or the NFL draft. Niners Wire 02/2018.
****** I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT I HOPE AND THINK YOU GET MY POINT
It states that he CAN play ST, can round off the end of the roster and is an affordable player- ALL OF WHICH FACTORED IN THEM EXTENDING HIM, IE- GIVING HIM LOVE. The above quotes and the accompanying bibliography I hope suffice in answering your assertion..
Thank you,,

He's got a team option for like $4.5 million....I'm not keeping Marsh for that.

That I can agree with, $$$$ talks for sure, but based on their "enamouration" of him, they may restructure that same number (like cut it in 1/2, make it a 2 yr. type deal, backload it, and cut him next year???)..
Barrett has to be on Lynch's radar.
He would be tremendous opposite side of Bosa!!
The more I read about him the more I like him on our team
Is he a bigger impact player than a guy like Ray from the broncos?
With Graham tied up this is the guy I hope we target
