I thought Breida was slightly better this game, considering Breida was running almost exclusively between the tackles. Williams obviously had a good game. But his upright running style is going to get him killed. He still seems one dimensional to me (outside the tackles). Which is fine as a complimentary back, but not as a #1.

The announcers mentioned that Williams has had an issue with fumbling. If he does, I wonder if his upright running style makes him more vulnerable to having the ball stripped away.

Yeah, it definitely doesn't help. But I was thinking more in regard to injury. Dude is going to get smoked if he runs that way.

Yeah, I got that from what you said. I only meant to add that fumbling might be another potential consequence of his running style.

Yep, I agree. I think he put two on the ground last night, right?

Two! , breida was one. I don't remember a second?

Wasn't it Williams who dropped the pitch?

Yeah, then picked it up and ran for 10

I'm sure the coaching staff will think it's a complete non-issue then. Put it in the "things that aren't sustainable" category.

It's only one game but he sure looked impressive.

Oh man, I'm really surprised by this. I'm objectively asking, not being snarky... what is it about Joe William's game that makes you think he's close to Carlos Hyde? Again, asking honestly.

He's fluid. Has leg drive power. Goes from 0 to 60 in one step, not two, but one step. He's like a faster version of Gore. Let's hope his vision is similar to Gore's as well. Only thing about Gore was that he only went 0 to 30 in one step.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. I don't think there are many similarities between Gore and Williams at all. Gore was comparatively much more compactly built, heavier and ran much, much lower to the ground. Gore also created holes for himself when asked to run between the tackles.

I hope you don't take this as Joe Williams hate. I think he has the ability to be a very good player, and I'm happy we have him. I just think there is a very low bar for rookies to earn favorable comparisons. Same with CJ Beathard. I think these guys have a lot more work to do to even earn these comparisons, let alone overtake the unquestioned starter.

Gore also runs with an extreme forward lean that gives him an extra couple yards on every carry...it also keeps him from taking big hits, probably why he's lasted so long as a RB in the NFL.

Odd thing was that Gore was horrible at the goal line and short yardage.

I think fumbles early in his career played a role in this. Gore was solid in short yardage under Harbaugh.
