My man!

I had us going after Malcolm Smith (perfect experience) and Kevin Minter (or Zach Brown) as well as resigning Gerald Hodges and Sean Spence for depth/competition and resigning Bellore for Special Teams. Also, the SAM is basically the fastest LB in this defense and I'd ask Harold to lose 10-15 pounds and get back to his normal playing weight where he ran a 4.58. Going this route, at most, we'd tie up $15.5M in the LB's while the DL is already 'paid for.'

SAM: (Malcolm Smith 4.44); Eli Harold & (Gerald Hodges) --- ShanaLynch bring in a familiar LB to this Seattle defense and Hodges is a nice resigning (4th best per PFF). There could be a real competition here esp. if Harold starts to make a quick transition. The SAM is the fastest in Seattle's defense and Smith runs a 4.44.
MIKE: Navarro Bowman (4.62); (Sean Spence) & (Nick Bellore) --- Here's to never having to see Bellore as a starter again (ST only). ShanaLynch add some much needed quality depth in Sean Spence.
WILL: (Kevin Minter 4.67); Ray-Ray Armstrong --- Nice young player in Minter and quality depth with Ray-Ray (ST). There could be a real competition here as well.
I don't think Hodges is trash...but there are better LB's who should be available. Minter's good, but I'd go with Zach Brown, who's a tackling machine and has run a 4.44. Looks like the Bolts will franchise Ingram...don't blame 'em, he's an outstanding player. For sure, Shanahan/Lynch have a number of options...I could see Brooks, Harold or Lynch play the Leo position. Ingram would've been ideal, but he most likely won't be available.

Why do you keep repeating this egregious fallacy of the "SAM is basically the fastest LB in this defense"? That's not even remotely true. The SAM LB is essentially a 3-4 OLB in this style of defense. Like a 3-4 OLB, the SAM in this defense primarily covers the flat. You don't need to be a blazer to cover the flat because you have the sideline as an aid.

Bruce Irvin is THE prototype at SAM. He was 6'3" and 260lbs when the Seattle defense was humming. Do you think he was "basically the fastest LB"? Lol, no.

Ideally, you are correct:

On the SAM: "The SAM linebacker controls the D gap to his side of the field. He is in an inside-foot to outside-foot alignment on the tight end or what most coaches call a 9 technique spot. He can never get reach blocked by the tight end in this position.

"He is the force player for everything run to his side of the field and turns everything back inside to the pursuit. Often he has the tight end in man to man in coverage. He has him anywhere he goes for this defensive call. He never switches if we are in this coverage and will go with him if the tight end does go in motion. He also has to be a good containment player. He has to be big and strong enough to play on the edge of the tight end. He has to be able to run in pass coverage also."

On the MIKE: "The MIKE linebacker is in an inside-foot to out-side foot alignment on the offensive guard on his side of the field. He's a traditional middle linebacker. He is instinctive and makes a lot of calls for the defense. He may be the guy with the most experience or the best feel for the game."

On the WILL: "The WILL linebacker is aligned against the offensive guard to his side of the field. He is basically a protected player in this alignment and should make a lot of tackles. He has to control his weak-side A gap and play relative to the MIKE linebacker and the Free Safety. In coverage, he often plays the short middle.

"The Will linebacker can be a smaller player. He is generally protected in the defensive schemes and will not see as many blocks. All you want him to do most plays is flow and chase the football. We want our fastest linebacker at this position."

I recently read where Pete was saying, basically, the SAM is the fastest (can't find it now) but here is his current lineup:

SAM: Michael Morgan (4.46)
MIKE: Bobby Wagner (4.45)
WILL: KJ Wright (4.71)

So, it can reverse depending on the player you can get. The roles and responsibilities should be the same though as described above.
Mike Morgan is their version of Michael Wilhoite. he's a backup, a placeholder. They lost Irvin and have yet to replace him. Its a big need for them going into this draft. Someone had to play the position, so Morgan got the job the same way Wilhoite started when Willis and Bow were hurt. I wouldn't deduce a single thing from Michael Morgan lol.

If you want a baseline, it's Bruce Irvin. He was drafted and molded in the vision of what Pete wanted at that spot.

Oh, I'm not arguing Bruce Irvin isn't the ideal SAM in their system. No question about that. We certainly need to interject some athleticism and speed into this group. Knowing Irvin would be leaving, it's a bit surprising they only had MM playing the role of Michael Wilhoite.
Any bet he ends up with the Patriots? by trade or release?

I like Hodges so hopefully the 9ers make a decision soon for him.

I think Hodges is gone. Kid is going to get overpaid somewhere in the second wave of F/A. Was a huge liability against the pass here and undisciplined within the scheme.
Oh just saw on the Free Agent thread that he's visiting the Chiefs.

I didn't even know he was a free agent...lol. Good for him.
