No way we pay a wr almost 10 mil a year. Even if we restructure I doubt the front office will go for it. Crabtree is more valuable to us than Jackson and would probably cost close to the same amount if and when we extend him.

Then why did we inquire about him? So Baalke could ask Gamble about the family?

Exactly...they inquire to see first if the team is really interested in trading the player and get an idea of terms. Then they talk to the agent to see if there's any flexibility on the player's contract/interest in restructuring to fit the new team's cap. If thumbs down on one or the other, it's a no-go.
Pretty simple stuff.

Yea, seems odd to target Jackson. I thought Baalke didn't believe in making guys off the street among the highest paid on the team?

Actually the team is not allowed to talk to the agent without Phili's permission. That's how we got in trouble with Briggs and Chicago.

Yes, as part of that initial discussion with the team as per above.

We had initial discussions with Chicago as well, and still ended up giving them picks and position. It is not always the best thing for a team to give permission to a potential trade partner to allow them to speak to the agent.

DeSean Jackson on paper sounds so f**king amazing. Kinda like how Braylon and Moss sounded. Those 2 really didn't have huge impacts unlike Boldin. I'd be ecstatic to have Jackson but at the same time holding my breath because I know what FA history has showed us. Would he flourish in our system? Would he work with our lockerroom? On paper, Jackson would be amazing. Other than that, I'd have to see it with my own eyes that him on the team would work out for myself....

Not gonna happen, basically all the other reports have poured cold water on the original one. The 49ers were curious, they asked, didn't like what they heard, end of story.

I get what you're saying, but I think we're getting too deep in the weeds here. I wasn't trying to make this an issue of detailed process; it was more about the timing of things (inquiry THEN agent contact). Inquiry (if it happened) would show they considered Jackson but if the team asking price was too high or the agent discussion didn't yield the right results, the whole thing would be DOA.

Oh, I'm aware of the reality. Always fun to think about though.

Raiders signed OT Donald Penn. Very good signing. If Menelik Watson can stay healthy they'll have good bookend tackles.
But of course some of the doots here will say what a terrible signing it is because it's the Raiders.

Fair enough, I am guilty of placing to high a priority on the small details on the regular. It is not uncommon for my daughters to roll their eyes when I start telling a story. We are seeing eye to eye..
