Nnamdi Asomugha was a 49er

I think this signing along with the Boldin trade are going to be two of the best quiet moves of the offseason. With Crab and Cully going down, I don't think there will be much of a drop in production.

If Nnamdi can keep playing like he has, he could actually be an upgrade.

i am just glad he is on our team and will contribute. you can never have enough corners and i think he will pull a walt harris on us this year.

That's because Fangio is loyal to his players and never gave Nnamdi a chance to win one of the starting spots. It will be interesting to see if Nnamdi starts at sone point for Rogers if he out plays him.

I think the Zone underestimates Rogers though too. And I think most of us agree that Brown is our most polished CB. Still, it's definitely a positive that Nnamdi is playing well to make the team on merit.

Yeah, Rogers performed fairly well in the slot but people don't understand most struggle there. The slot is the hardest position to cover but Nnamdi is a better outaide CB than Rogers.

I read reports that they were working Brown a lot in the slot this off season. I wonder if he slides inside and Nnamdi takes over for Rogers on the outside (breather) and Cox plays outside as well but in Brown's outside spot. I say this b/c Cox has been playing Brown's CB spot all pre season. Anyone have theories? We face GB so...

Rogers worked a lot on his quickness in the offseason so he should be better this year than last.

Culliver was a very good CB with all of the tools except one ... locating the ball in the air.

The secondary will be better than last year I think with Reid being a more traditional safety eliminating the big TD plays and hopefully the corners have improved overall, and the pass rush should be more fierce this year. All that said, it's not like last year's pass D was in any measure bad overall ... it was just a few games at the end where it went to hell.

I hope so... I've been wanting that for more than a year now. Culliver and Nnamdi are much better suited against bigger WR outside.

Why would we give the CBs a breather? But if we need someone to come in for the outside, Brock should get in before Cox. But if someone needs to come in for the slot, you go with Cox.

RCB - Asomugha

LCB - Rogers

slot - Brown

On certain passing situations.

I think Rogers is solid against the bigger receivers or on the outside for that matter. Cox IMO is a dime CB unless injuries occur. Also gotta figure sooner or later Eric Wright will step in somewhere....man that's some serious depth.

Roger's issue is his motivation. He half-assed it a good portion of last year after getting his big pay day and got pwned in the Superbowl when we needed him most. He plays harder once he's burned esp. on TV. Perhaps the added push of both Nnamdi and Wright (and the development of Cox, Brock, Cooper, etc.) gets his head right and he plays full speed all the time. I hope. But we shouldn't "hope" based on his contract...our committment to him. Actually, the S's where a concern all last year IMHO esp. in the RZ. Goldson was no where to be found and Whitner is on every Niner clip on NFL Network...giving up TD after TD. If Reid has ANY coverage ability and can knock down a pass, make an INT and help in the RZ and over-the-top for our CB's, we'll be WAY better. But so far, Whitner continues to look even slower and is still late (and short) to cover.

Rogers got powned in the Super Bowl? Really? Yes Boldin made a big 4th down catch on him, but Rogers didn't have a terrible game.

Just overall the entire back end couldn't communicate at all. People talk about Culliver getting beat by Jones but that was due to miss-communication between him and Whitner. We better clean it up this year.

That's not accurate unless you're thinking of Culliver.

I'd say Rogers does play better after his pride is injured ... I hope the end of last year was enough to wake him up for a season.

Willis and Bowman are better at covering than Whitner ... but it doesn't look like Dahl or Robinson is much better than Whitner in that area and Whitner is our best S against the run ... or at least he was.

Fangio's defensive priority is stop the run first and second, then slow or stop the pass ... and for that he likes big corners and aggressive safeties ... and the Ds flexibility is helped enormously by Willis/Bowman taking care of everything in the middle of the field. I wonder if this year we see more of Spillman and less of Whitner on base downs.

Dude, best will in the world here but mis-communication can explain that deep throw, but not falling on him or making contact when Jones was on the ground is just horrible.... I mean he actually jumped over Jones and then let the guy stand up and humiliate him again on the way to scoring
