He needs to appeal this. Hopefully it gets reduced.

It comes down to the pattern of behavior. I really think the incedent at the airport was the nail in the coffin. If Godell didn't believe rehab had any impact on Aldon he was unlikely to consider it when handing down the suspension.
Smart move by him also waiting till after he said he was wrong about ray rice to suspend aldon for that length.

What Aldon did was unprecedented. No player has never left mid-season to join a re-hab program. In the past, every other player with an addiction played out the season and continued to get f**ked up in the off-season. Never addressed it.
Aldon voluntarily went away for 5 weeks for the distinct purpose of changing his life and showing everyone he wants to do the right thing. Goodell responds by delivering a shocking penalty that is unbelievably harsh for what he's done.

The NFLPA had better file an appeal on this. It's ridiculous.
And could some people stop pretending that it's a lot worse than Lynch. The current DUI is Lynch's second. Not his first. And, he's already been suspended for a weapons felony, not a misdemeanor. He's also been involved in an altercation with a woman. So, let's just see what they have in store for Lynch and it had better be comparable.

Goodell is going to need some serious security if he pays a visit to Levi's stadium

No future NFL player will ever check into rehab or partake in any sort of major efforts to turn their lives around, the incentive was just taken away. I'm sure if a person is sincerely wanting to turn their life around and quit drinking etc they'll do so but not immediately or during a season. Even if it's just for show and to minimize suspension time once in rehab, away from their normal routine and forced to face themselves, things can sincerely change for people. Lives can be saved. Not only the players but innocent lives. Goodell is an idiot. A complete and utter backwards thinking fool.
This! I guarantee players won't be proactive because there's no incentive.

Aldon Smith has appeal rights, which presumably could delay the suspension.
