Simple.

Last year, because the CBA had been terminated early, players that were normally going to be free agents due to 4 years of service, were not, since it was defaulted to 6 years. As a result, with the new CBA, the terms returned to 4 years of NFL service to become a UFA this year, so all the players that didn't get to be free agents last year got to be free agents this year.

Because of this, the free agent market was saturated this year with players, which created a soft market, and players weren't as desirable as they might have been in a different year. Therefore, a lot of players are signing 1 year deals in hopes that next year their services might be more desirable because the player market will return to normal.

Yup, but the high volume of one year deals this year might oversaturate the market next year, too. There could be a similar issue in the FA market next year

Yup.
Is that the only reason? If that were the case, wouldn't teams and players being signing multi-year deals that have optionality in the second year -- like a big roster bonus in April or something?
Another FA question, how are compensatory draft picks awarded, is there some salary based formula? Like we signed 12 million worth of FA's and lost 30 million so we get X number of picks?
I'm Ron Burgundy?

It's contract value, playing time, and post-season awards. The NFL will not release the actual formula, though, so everyone has to guess.
