49ers' free agent targets

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com says that the San Francisco 49ers' first priority when the lockout ends -- after re-signing Alex Smith, of course -- will be the acquisition of undrafted free agents, and he knows some players the team will target.

"They can be expected to make an offer to Louisville quarterback and Santa Rosa native Adam Froman, who might also consider the Miami Dolphins as a landing spot," Maiocco writes. "Stanford offensive linemen Chase Beeler and Derek Hall also are possible 49ers targets.

"The 49ers will look to add undrafted free agents at every position. General manager Trent Baalke will organize the efforts so that every position coach and scout will begin working the phones the moment the signings are allowed to begin."

Granted I never really saw us much as a Free Agent threat, I think overall we have a solid team that just needs some tweaking but why would we want an undrafted QB behind a rookie and A. Smith? Thoughts

Regarding a qb, we are pretty much all agreed that Carr is useless. So I would expect them to pick up an udfa and a vet and let them fight it out. Going into a season with two qb's would be unwise.
My list of guys to look at...

QB
Don't bother wasting money. Smith/Kaepernick will go through the season. Only other option would be to replace Carr with say Bulger. Not really much value in doing that. Also, we need a QB for the practice squad. Adam Froman is probably that guy. I know a lot are on the trade for Josh Johnson bandwagon but at TB he is pretty much worthless to them. A couple wildcat plays... not worth a 3rd as I have seen some suggest. Would give up a 6th-7th at best. We gave up Hill for a 7th.

FB
Doubt we sign anyone but I believe Vickers, McClain, Ahmard Hall and Leach are all free agents. Those are some of the best in the game.

WR
I like Santonio Homes better than Braylon Edwards. Sidney Rice would be ok but probably overrpaid and put up his best #'s in Favre's career year. Not much in the other years. Vincent Jackson I see as kind of a benefit of the Chargers and Rivers high flying system. He is a good WR but we really don't use the long ball a whole lot. Wouldn't hate if we signed him but I really don't want to over pay him.

OL
Maybe a UDFA like Chase Beeler but we really don't need to get a vet OL unless we want to. In that case just resign Sims/Wragge. Too many other bigger needs to break the bank on a RG.

DL
Cullen Jenkins would be pricey but a great addition for DE. Kris Jenkins is in his last leg but might be good at NT for a year or two. Shaun Ellis could be a nice short term DE as well. Don't see us getting a high priced DE, think we give Ray his shot and get another lower priced guy potentially.

CB
Nnamdi, Joseph top the list. If we go cheaper Rogers, Drayton Florence, Ike Taylor, Marshall or Chris Carr. Definite need.

FS
Nobody really out there worth signing. Weddle is some what overrated and will get over paid. A lot better SS's out there but I think we have that covered with Mays/Reggie Smith.

Who is up on my list:
Nnamdi, Joseph, Cullen Jenkins, Holmes, McClain/FBs, Second Tier CBs, Kris Jenkins, Shaun Ellis

Who we probably target:
Cheap CB.... re-sign most of our own guys

I'll just throw out some of the better UDFA's. They should go like quick once the deal gets signed so I hope we are ready. A lot of good players out there. Hopefully one of these guys ends up on the roster or at least practice squad.

Pat Devlin
Scott Tolzien
Adam Froman
Taylor Potts

FB:
Henry Hynoski

WR:
Terrance Toliver
Ricardo Lockette
Dane Sanzenbacher
DeAndre Brown
Jeff Maehl

OL:
Tim Barnes - C
Jake Kirkpatrick - C
Zach Hurd - G
Derek Hall - G/T
Kris O'Dowd - C
Zane Taylor - C/G
Chase Beeler - C/G

3-4 NT:
Ian Williams
Anthony Gray

3-4 LB:

Mark Herzlich, ILB/OLB
Steven Friday, OLB
Thomas Keiser, OLB

CB:
Kendrick Burney

I like a lot of these guys but I really think we might only sign Froman, Beeler and Hall/Keiser.
Nnamdi please. Thank you.

This team has depth issues with the d line. If Ray mac and Franklin get better offers elsewhere the d line will be in shambles. I have to agree with gore21 that Kris Jenkins might be a good 1 year stop gap option if healthy and if needed.

I don't like the secondary at all so they need to address corner and safety imo. I think the safeties are all liabilities. Just gonna be hard to do with how the lockout is messing up the timing of free agency. Gonna be crazy for a rookie coach.

I like you list, but I'd like to add Ian Williams, Herzlich, and Friday. Neve hurts to have a lot of OLB in camp. Keiser knows the D, Friday gets after the QB, and Herzlich kicked cancer in the nads. Each guy could have a chance to impress. Williams would replenish depth on the DL, since Franklin's probably gone.
Jonathan Joseph
Richard Marshall

Chad Greenway, cut Parys. Start Greenway/aldon smith = championship

Carr was born to be a 3rd string QB. I think we are set with a vet backup and young gun.

why would you cut a solid veteran with starting experience when you only have to pay him 1.2 mil a year

BRANDON MEBANE / DL { 6' 1" - 311 lbs - 26 years old }

Stout, strong, and nasty DL that can give us versatility and quality depth along the DL. He would probably love to come back to California, and many knowledgeable Hawks fans that I have read from are really ticked off that Seattle failed to lock him up when they had the chance to. Adding this guy would be a great step in making this FA period a big success.
