Alex Smith in Free Agency

He just needs to go settle in as a backup somewhere and maybe he gets a chance to get lucky and be a starter again.

Alex hater's take note. Susweel is as good as an Alex hater as there is, and even he can come on here and make a decent reasonable post

Vrabbit,

I understand the point you are trying to convey, but using terms like hater and lover have historically been the downfall of Smith threads. Let's try and avoid these labels.

now that you've got that out of your system, continually repeating Alex Smith sucks, or a similar derivation may be construed as spamming.

Thanks everyone for being respectful to each other so far. Smith is as controversial as politics and religion it seems sometimes. I guess getting to the mountaintop five times will do that to group of people.

I think its funny that people cant grasp the concept that NFL coaches need to be political and/or professional when speaking of other players.

In Harbaugh I Trust.

Not a bunch of jokers.

Go out of his way? When have you heard Harbaugh just randomly bring up Alex and praise him? Let me save you the time. The answer is never. He is always responding to questions.

You guys just dont seem to get it. Its constantly said that "Alex may be our best option this year." Well what if Harbaugh agrees with that too? What if Harbaugh has the same "the lockout would prevent us from getting anyone better, so we might be stuck with this guy as our QB" opinion that other people do? Considering those potential circumstances, wouldnt it make sense that he would actually address this guy and pump him up?

All I am saying is NO ONE really knows what Harbaugh truly thinks about Alex. But Alex fans keep holding onto Harbaughs words, while people who are sick of Alex can hold onto history, film, statistics and lack of results.

this may be true but harbaugh and baalke offered smith a 1 year contract before the CBA expired so they are obviously intrested and want him back

Alex Smith eats babies! There, I said it. No, but really, he does. Pacifiers and all.

Seriously, I wanted to draft Smith, I have made this clear in the past. And, I thought, at the time, he brought an intelligence and athleticism with him that remind me of Steve Young. What he has not done, though, is develop. There are many reasons for it, but regardless, he has not done it.

Look, Alex Smith is not a reclamation project, he was the number one pick in the draft. Does he deserve a shot to play? Absolutely, but not here. Here, regardless of our new coach, he will never be accepted. Think of it this way, it is already difficult to play quarterback for the Niners considering the level of pedigree we have had at the position.

Now, be Alex Smith, whose very mention sends posters over the edge on these forums and ultimately leads to someone getting banned. He is so polarizing now, no matter what he does, he will be despised.

I am willing to say that if he wins a Super Bowl, people will still wait for him to fail after the fact. It has gotten that bad.

For his psyche, and ours, its time to go.

This has been tried before and has failed, but I'm feeling masochistic.

This thread is to discuss his strengths and weaknesses, and where he might sign as a free agent. Where do you think he'll sign, where do you hope he signs, best/worst situations, etc. Best/Worst situation may include how he fits under Harbaugh and the 49ers.

He is not under contract with the Forty-Niners, he is effectively unemployed, this thread is not for complaining about it being here vs Niner Talk. His status is no different than Jenkins or Asomugha.

Referring to other members as Alex Haters and Alex Lovers can be construed as a personal attack and could result in a warning. Repeated posting of the same comment can be construed as spamming and could result in a warning. Continually bringing him up in threads that have nothing to do with him, while this thread is open, can also be construed as spamming or inciting and could result in a warning.

Now....go!

I like this thread

I think Alex has a franchise QB value under the right coach. The guy just keeps coming back and never complains.

He also seems to be inconsistent and has been given a lot of time to become a leader.

All and all I would say he is a late bloomer.

Well said. It's time to GO!
Here goes politics:
You are either for him or against us.

Here goes religion:
Alex open your mind and you can part opposing defenses, just don't look up too high.
I think the following will help explain why Alex is not ready to accept the 49er offer. All you have to do is scan the terrible dearth of quality QBs on many NFL rosters.

It is said that there are about nine teams that desparately need a better starting QB. Most of them will try to draft one of the eight or nine top ranked QBs in the draft, but most of theses youngsters will not be ready for the NFL and it would be unwise for teams to throw them into the fire too early. In addition history suggests that some of these top nine will disappoint. Therefore, these teams will be looking for a quality vet to tide them over until a top QB is found or made ready.

Here are these teams. Look at the QBs currently on their rosters, with their QB ratings:
CAROL J. Clausen 23 '10 - 58.4
M. Moore 26 '10 - 55.6
K. Null 25 '10 - 49.9
T. Pike 25 '10 - 60.1

CINN C. Palmer 31 '09 - 83.6, '10 - 82.4
D. LeFavour 24 No regular NFL game exp.
J Palmer In league 3 yrs, threw total of 15 passes - 33.1

ARIZ D. Anderson 27 '10 - 65.9
J. Skelton 23 '10 - 62.3
R. Bartell 28 '10 - 57.1

SF D. Carr 31 '10 - 23.6, last full season: '06 - 82.1

MINN T. Jackson 28 '07 - 12 games-70.8
P. Ramsey 32 '03, '04, '05 all about 75.0
M. Bomar 25 No regular NFL game exp.
J. Webb 24 '10 - 5 games -60.9

SEA M. Hassellbeck 35 '08 - 57.8, '09 - 75.1, '10 - 73.2
J. Losman 30 '07 - 76.9, '08 - 62.3
C. Whitehurst 28 In league 5 years, played in 5 total games - 65.5

TENN K. Collins 39 '08 - 80.2, '09 - 65.5, '10 - 82.2
B Ratleff 25 No regular NFL game exp.
C. Simms 30 Threw total of 19 passes in last 4 yrs.

WASH R. Grossman 30 '10 - 81.2
J. Beck 29 No regular NFL game exp.

MIA C. Henne 26 '10 - 75.4
T. Thigpin 27 '10 - 73.0
T. Brandstater 26 No regular NFL game exp.

Now for a few FAs:
McNaab 34 '10 - 77.1
M. Bulger 35 '07 - 70.3, '08 - 71.4, '09 - 70.7, '10 - didn't play

So what do you think? Alex's has about 50 games of NFL experience and his '10 QB rating of 81 doesn't look too shabby in comparison.
Alex Smith is our best option at QB, imo
Mcnabb sucks and is too old, Kolb and Orton are too expensive, rookie in a locked out off season would be hell, and david carr is trash.

And Palmer sucks also. He had TO, Ochocinco, Benson, Shipley, etc. and put up the same numbers as Alex, he wont do any better than Alex did last year.
