Well, I think Alex has had some better than average OCs. Norv Turner, Mike Martz, and Mike McCarthy were all pretty good. All have success in developing QB's (even as far as up to the HOF and SB MVP level)...

As for supporting casts; our towel boy is second to none...

out of the OC's you listed the only OC he worked with for a full season was Norv Turner. McCarthy was his rookie year where he came in during week 5(could be wrong on the game) Not to mention the talent on that team was horrendous. Martz he was on IR.

And with all those excuses (even the untrue ones), he still had Norv Turner, Mike Martz, and Mike McCarthy to learn from.

Look at what Josh McDanials was able to do with Sam Bradford in a season. For Sam to have had the type of year he had, Josh would have to be a much better coach than Norv, and McCarthy or Sam must be a much better QB than Alex.

If Alex stands a chance at NFL success, he needs to go to a team where he can sit and learn behind a solid QB. Let him do what he does best; study. Once he knows the in's and out's of the O then maybe give him another shot to start.

The best argument for bringing him back that I see is that there may not be much of a free agency period, and therefore he may be our best/only option.

If Cincy won't budge on Palmer, Bulger signs with Arizona, Hasselback signs with Seattle, and McNabb gets traded to Minnesota, then there aren't very many viable alternatives. I hope the organization doesn't give up a 1st or more for Kolb.

Smith at least has experience with the receivers and tight ends, so there will be some sense of timing there, although it wasn't uncommon to see the receivers having to adjust their pace to make a catch.

Yes if it continues it would be spamming. I've given a free pass to a "hater" and a "lover" now. If that's the extent of someone's contribution to the thread, then perhaps they should keep it to themself.

You can see from my last post, that I've asked for a better explanation, so I want to hold them to the same standard as everyone else.

If people continually simply quote that post without adding any value or additional commentary, then that could also be construed as spamming, as it only serves to clutter the board.

I know man, but going forward Im trying to respect the new rules you guys have put in place.

If this was a normal offseason, I'd be about 100% on having Smith leave and never return because we could try hard to get a replacement in FA or through trade. I like the kid, think that he got a raw deal here, have seen improvement, and believe that he can ultimately be a serviceable QB. However, the Smith/49ers relationship is too poisoned and damaged to ever fully be repaired. That is why I think that, ideally, both the team and the player should move on.

Since this is not a normal offseason though, I am open to having him return. I think Harbaugh's public praise is a bit exaggerated and calculated to keep the doors open. However, I also think that a Smith/Harbaugh pairing would be a decent short-term fix while a rookie QB (Dalton,etc.) watches and learns. Ideally, we'd try to get a third party veteran QB in (Palmer?) to run the ship for 2 years. However, unless this CBA crap gets straightened out soon, I don't see that happening, leaving Smith as the next best option. In other words, I'd take Smith over a rookie starter in '11, and a solid FA/trade over Smith.

I personally dont want Alex to come back because I personally think the guy is average on his best day. That said I do understand that Harbaugh is in a very bad situation as far as QB goes with this lockout deal. If he does come back and is the starter I will have very low expectations this year.


I do think as a person it would be hard for him to want to come back unless it was his ONLY opportunity. For me as a person it would be very hard to play for a team when 70,000 people will boo you on an incomplete pass. Its just very hard to perform under those circumstances.
