Agent: 49ers waiting on contract extensions

agree that it would be great for us to re-sign some of those guys, but the fact is that they have to WANT to re-sign. It makes sense for them to try and test free agency, whatever form that might take.

I agree with the 49ers philosophy to wait until actual free agency begins for right now.
It seems like guys like Aubrayo Franklin and David Baas are more valuable to us rather than other teams.

Franklin is strictly a one-gap 3-4 NT, and a 2-3 year solution at the position at best. In addition, the majority of 3-4 defenses already have their franchise NTs in place. The Texans and Bills are the biggest threats from the 49ers keeping Franklin - specifically the Texans as they are a playoff caliber team now.

At the same time, teams like the Texans and Bills may opt to go young and start the development process early. I blame him for a big part of our struggles early in the year.

And if we do lose Franklin, we do have Jean-Francois and Sopoaga that can play the position.

So I see it as a matter of retaining Franklin at the right price. And the 49ers can only figure that out once free agency starts.

Gotta watch the Redskins also. I believe they would easily over pay Franklin as there 3-4 d line is in dire need.

Very true. Although I don't know if they want to bite on paying a large contract to another d-lineman after the Haynesworth fiasco rather than developing someone young, and letting that young guy rotate with Kemoeatu.

I think the 9ers are making the right call on Franklin. We need him, but I dont trust him. I think he's gonna sign a big contract and cost.

I agree. I think AF will come at a high cost. I'd rather let another team over pay for him. It's not like he's in his prime of his career. i believe he's peaked as high as he could peak. not much more to get out of him.
I think signing baas & smith would be the best moves.

To be fair, Franklin has less wear and tear as he's only started for the past 4 years.

This

Franklin was a backup in Baltimore. A lot of miles left IMO. That being said, we should not overpay.

I think the thing that bugs me is that he didn't show much until he got close to free agency. He put up a good year and a half, then wanted a big pay day and held out just because we franchised him. I know it's a buisness, but I think if you look at the big picture you have to question his heart for the game.

Meh, non story. Again FA is the one thing this team has handled properly. Core franchise guys who are young and consistent have been rewarded: Gore, Willis, Staley, VD were all given long term deals at FMV. Spencer and Brown were locked up early to reasonable deals as 2nd/3rd tier guys. We were aggressive with J Smith and Nate.
It's not our fault bad teams are willing to overpay (see: raiders/redskins). Not every player is irreplacable, when you let those guys go with nothing in line to replace them you have a problem. Like we did with Andre Carter and JP (no pass rusher since). Since Donahue was dumped our drafts have been hit or miss but FA has been executed about as well as possible.
