Perhaps but Mike Holmgren, a guy who knows a thing or two about QBs, sent him packing from Cleveland. That suggests to me that there may not be much there to develop.
I don't like any of our options at QB. Alex needs to go. The free agents are all crap. There are a few QBs I would take a shot on in the draft but none before the third, I am not high on any of them. Who is the best backup that we could take a shot on for a 4 or 5th round draft pick?
1. Matt Hasselbeck; If he's an Unrestricted Free Agent
2. Josh Johnson; Trade for
3. Ricky Stanzi; Pick-up in the draft

It's just food for thought. Now, we'll be very solid in the QB department for quite sometime. Build on both Offensive & Defensive Lines...
Out of the free agents, Matt Hasselback or Seneca Wallace. I think our best option is to trade. Kyle Orton or Josh Johnson are my picks. We draft a rookie (maybe even two or sign an undrafted free agent) and keep Troy Smith as our number 3.
I know that this thread has been dormant for quite a long time. But I thought I would mention that out of curiosity I checked in on the fan forums for the Cardinals, Vikings and Titans. By a large margin, the fans are clamoring for their teams to trade for Orton and to draft Ponder.

Notice they aren't falling all over themselves in the hope of landing Alex Smith.
It's becasue they do not understand all of the circumstances like some of us do.

You mean they aren't clinging to what isn't there.

The only reason our fans want him back is because they believe harbaugh is a coaching God like Walsh and can turn turds into gold.

I believe he's still more of a project than most of those rookies, and that's sad after 6 years in the league.

Alex Smith may be the ONLY option depending on the CBA issue. And Smith's numbers were middle of the road anyway. He already has some chemistry with our skill positions.

No, the situation sucks, but Alex Smith may be our best bet to win this year. Therefore, it makes sense of us to draft a QB high and develop him under Alex or Palmer or McNabb or Hasselbeck.

When the CBA is signed, and teams begin bidding for a veteran QB, the price for Orton will end up a 1st round pick.

Orton would be my choice but I don't believe he is worth more than a low 2nd at best.

This is just a terrible year to need a QB...mediocre draft class, poor FA group, expensive trade possibilities. YUK!

Hmm...is it really that bad if we don't play football this year then? [ducks under flameshield]

DO NOT waste the #7 pick on the QB's in this years draft. (They all are 2nd round talent at best)
DO NOT pickup Palmer (No loyalty = no respect)
DO NOT resign Alex Smith (No accuracy 10+ yards)

1) McNabb and develop 3nd pick or Josh Johnson (Trade)
2) Trade for Kolb
3) Hasselbeck and develop 3rd pick or Josh Johnson (Trade)

Sleepers
1) Seneca Wallace FA
2) Kapernick 4th round
3) Caleb Hanie FA
4) Colt Brennan FA

alex has great accuracy from 10+ yards its his 10- yards thats the problem lol

anyway i dont want kolb (unless its for a 3rd or something) his numbers are not much better than smith and he had a better coaching stability and better weapons
