Free agent QB or rookie? what are our choices?

Is Kolb a free agent, I thought he was under contract.

I think our choices are a free agent QB, a rookie, or trading for a veteran.

Just because people in the WZ keep talking about him like he is a FA, it doesn't make it true. He's under contract next year, fully guaranteed money.

while Kolb isn't a free agent, he's definitely expendable to the eagles. Vick is their man and will be.

Michael Vick on the other hand IS a free agent.

Everyone seems thrilled that Alex Smith is apparently gone. Great. Now who or more importantly what do you expect to use as a replacement. David Carr? Please! They won't even try to sign Troy Smith, which should tell you something. Alex has his flaws, but he is a legitimate NFL quarterback. We don't know how he would do with a good coach and good system. I have reviewed all of the potential QB free agents and none of them are better than Alex Smith. No team is going to trade a legitimate QB prospect to the SF49ers. If they draft someone, it will be at least 3 years before we even know if they can play in the NFL.

I predict that Alex Smith will be a hot commodity. If you listened to the coaches who were commentators this year they were all positive about Alex Smith. That included some who are candidates for the 49'er job. If the new coach does not have Alex Smith available it may be difficult to put together a winning offense for several years. I suspect they know that.

Listening to the game Sunday it was interesting how many times Jim Mora pointed out that the reason a pass was not completed was that the receiver gave up on the route. Smith took the blame for an overthrow, but at least a couple of those could have and should have been caught.

Alex may not be the answer, but sadly he is probably years ahead of any available replacement. There is a reason Donavan McNabb is not playing in Washington. There is also a Philadelphia cut him. The same is true of EVERY experienced QB in the NFL today. What the niners should do is sign Smith and sign a hot prospect. In two to three years one of two things will happen. Either Smith will surpise his critics and turn out to be very good indeed, or he will be mediocre, in which case the new guy will be ready to go.

If Aaron Rodgers had signed with the 49ers and Alex Smith had signed with Green Bay, 49er fans might just be complaining about how the niners let Smith get away. We will never know, but we do know that Aaron Rodgers got to spend several years watching Bret Favre and was not pressed into action before he had ample time to learn the system. I doubt that any quarterback would have had much better results if they were treated the way Smith was treated. You win as a team, you lose as a team. The niners were a losing team. Perhaps a superstar quarterback might have helped them win a couple of games, but there was a lot more wrong than just Alex Smith.

I am far from convinced that Alex Smith is the answer, I am just concerned that the alternative is likely to be much worse.

Kolb should be out of any discussion because the league announced today that no players may be traded until the new CBA is approved. Therefore we can discuss what we might LIKE to do but until the new agreement is in place, it won't happen.
