bottom line is we can plug in andy lee and he'd do good too

The Niners have done a fantastic job of drafting quality DL in later rounds (Soap,McDonald,RJF). The irony in this is the one 1st round DL that the Niners have drafted in the last 10 years (Balmer) turned out to be a bust.
I knew Franklin was expendable but I HAD NO IDEA that Soap would be this good....
Highly overrated but a solid player for us. But thinking back could the Niners defense ever stop the run up the middle in a short yardage situation? No we couldnt and they would run down Franklin's throat. He was good at taking up space and controlling the LOS. But he doesnt offer any explosiveness and he doesnt have anything near the athleticism that Sopoaga does. Sopoaga was a 330 lb DE for crying out loud. How many of those do you see playing in the NFL on Sundays?

So do we still go after a stud NT very early in the draft?

I think Culliver will be starter material by next year and if we resign Rogers we are good at CB (Spencer,Brock,Brown at back up).

Whitner is with us for another two years so Goldson is probably the odd man out I would assume? We really could use a stud free saftey if Goldson bails.

Of course, I believe Brooks contract is up after this year, so that could present a big need for us if he wants more cheddar than he is worth.

I don't think we need to go for a NT early-on. Soap is playing lights-out and RJF has proven himself to be a very worthy back-up right now.

I agree that Culliver should be able to start next year and that (depending on how Alex finishes the season), resigning Rogers should be our number 1 priority. But I still think we could use another CB.

Most people on the zone don't seem to be a fan of Whitner, but I really like watching him play. His coverage skills are iffy, but he's a SS so I can live with that. The way Goldson is playing right now, I think he might earn himself an extension. But again, just like with the CBs, I think another FS is an absolute necessity for this team come draft day.

I think Brooks will be back. Our pass-rush is by committee, not through anyone individually. In the end, I think we extend him for a modest amount.

Dont disagree Soap is playing well, but much like when he played DE he's much better at clogging than penetrating. Could you imagine if we had a NT that actually could get some push up the middle with J.Smith, RayMac, and The Condor coming off the edges? Yikes! With that said, I'm still on the fence.

P.S. You're right about Goldson, I dont know why I forgot Whitner is a SS and Goldson is FS. I guess because Goldson plays much more like a strong saftey, imo.

If Braylon doesnt come back we may need that first round pick for a receiver if we decide the defensive backfield is good.

He certainly does. His coverage skills are probably the most questionable on the team and he often takes bad angles when he tackles. With him, it's about making the big hit...which he does really well. Thankfully, he really hasn't given up any big plays so far this season though *knock on wood*

Exactly! Braylon might be gone, we don't know if/how Morgan will come back after his injury and Kyle Williams has yet to show me anything promising (aside from that one TD). That leaves us with Crabs and Teddy (I think his contract might be up too).

How is Abreu doing in New Orleans?

To answer my own questions. 8 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 ff.

I live in N.O. and watch every game... Franklin has been a big disappointment, and can barely get playing time.

Sopoaga's not doing THAT much better than Franklin did... it's just that Franklin was SO VERY RIDICULOUSLY overrated by fans...

huh

I think Braylon has a lot of talent, but I think I would much rather have small speedy recievers for the type of offense we run (Wes Walker and Steve Smith being extreme examples). Even if we had CJ or Moss in his prime, I really dont see us becoming a "jump ball" kind of offense. However, I guess with the premium we put on blocking WRs, maybe we need big body recievers.

Sorry for hi-jacking this thread.

Talk about beating a dead horse but once again I can't help but be thrilled that we let Franklin walk. I checked the stat line of tonights game and he didn't register anything, not one tackle, after seeing that I checked out the list of inactives and he wasn't listed. Maybe he did some good good work in the trenches or something but we made the right call on not paying him.
Score was 62-7. Defense wasn't on he field much and I'm sure befit pulled when it was out of hand. But he can still SUCK IT!!
