Ridiculous signing in my opinion. $5 million per year is almost starter money and this guy hasn't thrown a regular season pass since he was drafted.

Regarding the recent trade for a new quarterback, Mora said, "I had no idea who Charlie Whitehurst was until there was talk about him, I'd never heard of the guy. . . . I have some friends on the San Diego staff, and they're feeling pretty darn good about the deal."

never heard of the guy before this thread. if he hasnt had a snap in the NFL in 4 years he will be nice and soft for Willis and the rest of the boys to destroy. willis has an impressive kill streak going (Hasselbeck, bulger, hines ward, jets receiver with no soul, pretty sure hes hurt warner before too but i dont remember exactly.) whitehurst will be next victim, if he lasts long enough to play us.

Now that would have been the QB to go after.
based on his never throwing a pass before, or based on his inability to beat out billy volek on the depth chart?
oh wait....
Just because we have not seem him throw in a regular game does not mean he does not throw the ball.
From my understanding he has generated a buzz just on what his development has been going like internally. People in the NFL talk to each other man. Usually, when a buzz gets started, it is for some reason. They are not a sewing circle.
You know Nate Davis actually has some people talking too, its just Whitehurst has had the buzz growing for a couple of years.
I know what Alex's ceiling is. I have seen it. I know Carr's ceiling, I have seen it.
Just don't come crying to me when the Seahawks have their Franchise QB in a fraction of time it took the Niners to find theirs. A team who has been looking since 02
You're really claiming Whitehurst to be a Franchise QB?
Nope. I am sure not. I am stating that this method of testing unknown QB's for a better ceiling identification will lend itself to a shorter amount of time to get your guy.
As opposed to the 49ers who take the very longest route. Because the only possible franchise QB the Niners ever entertained was Alex Smith. At least Carroll is showing that he is going to test out decent options in a short amount of time.
Anyway, my main point is that it is pretty hilarious to listen to Niner fans try to clown on other teams QB woes

We are in a better QB situation than the effing Seahawks.
Yeah I said it..........and you can take that to the bank.

We are laughing at what they gave up for what they got. You'd think they would have invested in a QB in the draft or trading for a guy who, well actually threw a pass in the NFL maybe?
If the 49ers gave up that for Charlie Whitehurst I'd have lost all faith in anything this team would ever do. To me Whitehurst is probably at or below the level of Nate Davis. In the 4 or 5 years he has been in the NFL he never even managed to become the #2 option in SD.

I am afraid I am kind of speechless on this one.
Are you tellling me you can draft a QB that has thrown an NFL pass?
Are you telling me that you can not comprehend how a guy who has been a backup for a couple of years is not EASIER to project than a NCAA prospect???
and by the way, it is easy to snicker at people with vision. But it is not an unheard idea that the NFL would get better QB play with a QB developmental league or something like that, which this basically is. Carroll has decided to call up a QB from the minors if you will, as opposed to drafting a QB which has a higher rate of never starting and never resigning than the opposite.
Further. If the system in San Diego is close to what Carroll wants to implement, even more reason to get Whitehurst.
This could be perhaps the beginning of a trend.
